The Yellow House team is committed to creating comfortable and accountable spaces for students who identify as Queer, and/or Trans, and/or Black, and/or Indigenous, and/or People of Colour (QTBIPoC) to feel safe, to create community, to feel empowered, to celebrate their identity and to flourish. We seek to engage QTBIPoC students in initiatives that actively dismantle oppressive, racist and colonial ideologies and practices.

A little about the Yellow House Newsletter

Welcome to the Yellow House Student Centre for Equity and Inclusion Newsletter! My name is Tianna Edwards and I am the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Coordinator at Yellow House, I also curate this special newsletter. I started my career in journalism and I am really passionate about storytelling as well as archival practices - especially when it comes to queer and racialized folks. I want students to feel seen and heard! The purpose of the newsletter is to build sentiments of belonging, validate lived experiences and celebrate all of the wonderful students, programs and events associated with the Yellow House and also make sure that folks know what is coming up so they don't miss any opportunities to participate! Enjoy scrolling through this joyful update from the Yellow House Team, artwork by student staff Neza Mugabe and Kizzie Johnson.

Throwback: Orientation and Welcome

Yellow House Welcome: We had our welcome on the lawn to kick off the school year with snacks curated by the QTBIPoC grocery list - they were a hit! We loved meeting you all. A big thank you to those who stopped in and contributed to the back drop for the portrait for the Black Welcome.

Black Welcome: Our second annual Black Welcome featured delicious food by Jerkebago, music by DJ Zari and portrait sessions with photographer King-David (@kingdavid.oa). A big thank you to all who dropped in and grabbed a bite and took a pic!

We were proud to offer the Queer Walking Tours that allowed folks to read and view archival images that highlight 2SLGBTQ+ relevant historic spaces, and important spaces today. Walking Tours have wrapped but there is still an opportunity to learn about Queer histories on campus! Did you know? 51 Bader Lane was once named The Grey House, and it housed many of Queen’s student clubs. The student clubs were not only connected by sharing the house, but they were also connected by their mandate to help and empower marginalized students. One of the main clubs was the Queens Homophile Association (QHA)- the first Queer student club at Queens! Check out the Queer Walking Tours booklet. Have something you'd like to add? Please email yellowhouse@queensu.ca.

Roots and Recipes: Shakshuka Nov 21-22

Shakshuka has a contested history, but it is commonly believed that the dish originated in Tunisia and bordering regions of Algeria and Libya. The word Shakshuka comes from the Tamazight word shak-shak, which translates to all mixed up. The Tamazight language was spoked by the Amazigh people, residing in the Amazigh triangle, which consists of eastern Algeria, southern Tunisia, and northwestern Libya. You can make your own Shakshuka at home with our meal kit! Register here and pick up on Nov 21 or 22. Learn more about Roots and Recipes programming.
