July's Most Mischievous!
Meet Kirby, the mischievous :
Mama made all the blankets clean and then she made my bed. I promptly peed in it and then laid in it!
-- Kirby

Thanks, Lynn! Beautiful yorkie!

New Beginnings
DJ is living his best life!
Thank you to the Gotto family for loving and adopting this sweet little man! This is DJ's first trip on the boat, he looks so happy!
JULY'S FEATURED RESCUE
Meet Oliver!
Oliver is a sweet little three pound man, just under two years old. He's a happy, fun loving and social guy who enjoys going on walks and chasing squirrels. Oliver unfortunately has a couple of medical conditions that impair his quality of life. He has a grade 3/4 luxating patella (see below for more info on luxating patella) that impairs his mobility and needs dental extractions to help him chew better and prevent long term oral diseases.

CLICK HERE for more information about Oliver and to donate! Oliver is not ready for adoption but any donations sent will go directly to Oliver's veterinary care if you mention his name on your paypal donation or check.

Yorkies and luxating patellas
What is a luxating patella?

A luxating patella is a condition affecting the kneecap, where the bone dislocates or moves out of its normal position. There are various grades of a luxating patella, based on what causes the patella to move and how stable the joint is. Sometimes dogs develop a traumatic luxation, where they injure themselves and cause the condition acutely, but in most circumstances the cause is congenital or developmental. Yorkies (and other small breeds) are notorious for this condition, such that your yorkie's evaluation at the vet will usually involve checking for luxation.

What are the signs?

Depending on the grade of luxation, your yorkie may or may not have symptoms. The most common sign of luxating patella is "skipping", when your yorkie suddenly starts carrying the affected limb for a few steps before returning to a normal gait.
How are yorkies diagnosed?

Yorkies can be diagnosed with luxating patella by a physical examination initially, but may require additional imaging or examination under anesthesia.

How are yorkies treated?

Management for this condition depends on severity. Some yorkies require only monitoring and some require surgical intervention to stabilize the joint.

With all of us experiencing some of our hottest summers ever please remember to stay hydrated and make sure your little dogs have enough water and a cool place to stay. If you are traveling in a car, NEVER leave your pet in the car even for a minute and if you are walking your dog on concrete or asphalt carry him in your arms to prevent severe burns to their foot pads. Lastly, don't forget to provide a safe place for your pet while fireworks are being displayed. Loud noises and bright light flashes can trigger seizures in some of our little ones.
I asked my husband, Dan, what I should say in this months message and the above are the things he's worried about-- not just his dogs, but your dogs too! So from both of us we wish you a very Happy Fourth of July! love.....

Thank you to our donors for your continued support!!
