July 2021

Just as we encourage our students to check into their Zone during the day, we want to check in with our Zones community with a monthly Zones of Regulation Check In. In our part of the world right now we are soaking up the summer sun and still in "vacation" mode. While it feels like summer has just started, many teachers and professionals will be in back-to-school planning in the next few weeks.

Our Zones team has been busy this

summer holding trainings and consulting with school teams. We are having our first annual team retreat so we can collaborate on future endeavors and brainstorm how we can better continue to serve our Zones community with new ideas.

In this issue of our 'Zones of Regulation Check In' find out how to earn a free Zones resource, help learners do their own check ins over their summer break, and enjoy learning more about our personal consultations, creative ways schools in our Zones community are using our curriculum and upcoming training dates.

The Zones of Regulation In Action

We are often asked- “How can I integrate The Zones into my outdoor space or playground?” This incredible sensory path shown in the photos below was created collaboratively by Blue Goose Therapy Services and Gooseberry Hill Primary School P&C in Western Australia.

What is a sensory path?

A sensory path is a guided course that engages different parts of the body and brain in order to “get the wiggles out”, focus, and regulate.

Projects like the Blue Goose Therapy Services and Gooseberry Hill Primary School P&C are a fantastic way to allow learners authentic practice with identifying their Zone, using movement-based tools and strategies for regulation, and fostering opportunities for teachable moments and discussion along the way.

A bonus to projects in outdoor/community spaces is that it invites families and community members to participate in this new type of social and emotional learning along with their children.

In designing this outdoor sensory path, Anna Campbell, an occupational therapist at Blue Goose, took into account that students were learning about The Zones of Regulation with their teachers and saw an opportunity to integrate Zones Check-ins into a sensory path as a way to reinforce the concepts taught and give them an opportunity for self-reflection at the beginning and end of the activity.

This is what Gooseberry Hill teacher, Jess Newman, had to say about how this pathway is being used;

"Given that our path is accessible to all our students and families at any time, we often see our students, their siblings and families making their way along the path before and after school…Before starting the course, students identify the zone they are functioning within. They then move through the course and self-assess at the end of the course.”

We would love to hear from you! Tell us how you are incorporating The Zones of Regulation into your school, classroom or professional setting. Each month we will feature The Zones In . Please email us with your Zones Inspiration.
