June is National Pride Month! Every year in the month of June, the LGBTQIA+ community celebrates in various ways including parades, festivals, parties, educational opportunities, and community events all throughout Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley. Emphasis is put on the history of the Stonewall Riots, and influential people throughout history who have created significant change for this community.

Pride month is a time for anyone apart of the LGBTQIA+ community (and supporters!) to come together and celebrate their strengths, self-worth, and acceptance. This time also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of this issues facing this community. This includes violence, discrimination, and unequal rights.

Much work still needs to be done to protect the rights and inclusivity of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, it is important to take time to acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments that have been made by the trailblazers so far!

Want to know how you can contribute to celebrating or supporting this month? Here are 10 suggestions:

  1. Attend an in person or virtual Pride parade or event.
  2. Educate yourself on the history of Pride.
  3. Volunteer or Donate to LGBTQIA+ initiatives!
  4. Engage in LGBTQIA+ art, movies, books, and culture.
  5. Be an advocate/ally.
  6. Create a Pride playlist.
  7. Host your own Pride party/celebration.
  8. Spice your home, workplace, or personal space with pride décor.
  9. Write a card or letter to a friend to show your support.
  10. Wear your Pride on your sleeve with rainbow clothing and accessories.

Please see below for local events coordinated this month by Dutchess Pride!

As Pride rounds the bend again this year, we are especially in need of some connection and authenticity. In the face of nearly 500 anti-LGBTQ+ bills in state legislatures across the country

, the queer community (especially trans and gender-nonconforming youth and people of color), deserve the space to rejoice, grieve, dance, and feel together in safety.

FISH ADVISORY

Tips for Healthier Eating Sportfish and Game

Looking for delicious, healthy ways to prepare your locally caught fish? Read up on the best way to prepare what you catch!

It's important to reduce exposures to mercury, avoid or eat less largemouth and smallmouth bass, northern pike, pickerel, walleye and larger yellow perch (for example, longer than 10 inches) because these fish tend to have higher mercury levels, particularly in the Adirondack and Catskill regions.

Always make sure to check the advice for your favorite waters before eating a locally caught fish meal.
