Hello friend,

One thing we've seen over the past four years at #GrabYourWallet is that whenever the Trump administration does something particularly bad , there's a corresponding rise in traffic to the boycott list.

The first time was in the winter of 2017 during the administration's earliest attempts at a Muslim ban. That's when Nordstrom announced it was dropping the Trump brand.

Next was when Trump made his infamous “both sides” remarks after the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. At the time, we highlighted the U.S. CEOs who were members of Trump's economic and manufacturing forums. The forums disbanded.

In 2018 the world learned the Trump administration had separated thousands of children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border. Again, we saw a massive surge in traffic to the list. Shortly thereafter, Hudson's Bay announced it was dropping the Trump brand. Within days, Ivanka Trump announced she was shuttering her line.

Now, with new cases of coronavirus continuing to increase in Trump's America and the Trump administration issuing threats of violence against Black Lives Matter protestors, traffic to the #Grab Your Wallet list is once again spiking.

As longtime #GrabYourWallet participants, we know from experience we can have a lot of impact in this moment. To this day, there are companies that pay millions of dollars a year to the CEOs and board members who funded Donald Trump's political rise in 2016. The message to such companies is this: our hard earned money will not pay the salaries of those who fund the political rise of racists.

I urge you, contact one of the 46 companies that remains on the #GrabYourWallet list. Tell that company you will not do business with it again until it cuts ties with the executives who funded Trump's rise.

As always, if you hear back from any of the companies on the list, let me know. I am a citizen journalist working in tandem alongside you, so I stand ready to amplify any responses you receive.
Sincerely,

Shannon Coulter
President, Grab Your Wallet Alliance
Grab Your Wallet in Brief

Trump’s Inaugural Donors Added to Boycott List

In response to the historic Black Lives Matter protests, the Trump administration recently issued a threat against American citizens: "When the looting starts, the shooting starts." It's a statement with a racist past and one that was flagged by Twitter as glorifying violence. In response, the Grab Your Wallet Alliance has moved companies that donated to Trump's inaugural committee—Charles Schwab, Boeing, Bank of America and others— from the "on our radar" section of the site to the boycott portion. To be removed, companies should issue a statement saying they will refrain from making inaugural donations to Trump in the 2020 election cycle. If they do not, these companies will remain on the boycott list permanently, regardless of the outcome of the November election.

SoulCycle Reaches Out to Grab Your Wallet Alliance

Recently, a representative for Soul Cycle reached out to us to clarify the role of its parent company's chairman Stephen M. Ross. This may be a sign the company is taking steps to distance itself from Mister Ross. Stephen M. Ross is the billionaire who threw a Hamptons fundraiser for Trump's reelection that netted $12 million. Typically, when a company is reaching out to us (versus the other way around) it's an indication the company may be considering making the change we've requested. So, this would be an especially impactful time for you to reach out to Related Companies and ask if principle investors are planning to dissociate from Mister Ross. To do this, send an email to Samantha Bonizzi at Derris, the PR firm representing Related Companies. Her email is [email protected]

The #GrabYourBallot List Returns in August

The 2020 election is just a few months away. Grab Your Wallet Alliance is a non-partisan organization and yet at this particular moment in time, we strongly feel that one of the most effective ways to push back against the Trump administration is to elect as many Democrats as possible. To this end, we'll be launching a second edition of our #GrabYourBallot tool. With one click this tool will divvy up a donation as small as a dollar among a list of handpicked Democrats running in especially tight and/or important races across the country this fall. In 2018 we raised over $200,000 for such candidates in a few short weeks and 54% of the candidates on our list won. Stay tuned for more info.

Grab Your Wallet is Leaving Facebook

As you may have heard, several major brands are pausing their Facebook ad spend in July in response to the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, an effort being led by the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, and Color of Change. While we think it's great some positive changes are happening at Facebook as a result of this campaign, GYWA's position is that disinformation is likely to remain a pillar of Facebook's business model for as long as Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg are in charge of the company. Facebook was recently added to the #GrabYourWallet boycott list over its weak response to the "plandemic" troll farms posting massive amounts of misleading medical content to the Facebook platform from Northern Macedonia and the Philippines. GYWA's private Facebook group will be shuttered on July 4, 2020.
Today's Action Checklist

  • Contact SoulCycle's parent company, Related Companies, by sending an email to [email protected]. (Derris is the PR firm represents Related Companies.)

  • As Samantha if Related Companies' principle investors are planning to dissociate from / remove billionaire Trump supporter Stephen M. Ross.

  • If you have additional time, visit our public spreadsheet, and reach out to the companies that appear there, particularly those with which you have an authentic, longstanding relationship as a customer.
In Case You Missed It
The Washington Post recently featured one of Grab Your Wallet's flagship projects—Force the Issue—a campaign to encourage companies to stop requiring arbitration for sexual harassment claims. Research shows this practice protects serial harassers. Since the campaign began, hundreds of companies have gone on the record as no longer using the practice.
Coming Soon: GYWA Worker Council

To ensure our ongoing projects are informed by the needs and perspectives of low-wage workers and workers from traditionally marginalized communities, we're thrilled to announce that GYWA will be forming a worker advisory council and compensating members for their time and expertise. More on this soon.
