My Favorite Dental Health Tools: Toothpastes, Floss, Mouthwashes, etc.
The holistic dental space has grown significantly over the last few decades, making space for many beneficial and innovative non-toxic products.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Toothpaste:
I like xylitol toothpaste because it tastes great, is affordable, and has been proven to naturally reduce the bacteria that cause plaque, cavities, and other oral health issues.
Xylitol is an alcohol sugar extracted from either corn or, traditionally, birch.
Since it typically comes from corn, I recommend looking for non-GMO xylitol toothpastes that are also SLS- and SLES-free.
Hydroxyapatite toothpastes, like Boka and RiseWell, are often recommended by holistic dentists as a proven, safer alternative to fluoride.
Although concerns have emerged about nanonized hydroxyapatite, at present, regular hydroxyapatite appears to be a much safer bet than fluoride.
It's been used for decades in Japan and can be very helpful for those struggling with cavities.
You can also ask your holistic dentist about a hydroxyapatite varnish, which is similar to a fluoride treatment, minus the neurotoxic effects!
If new research emerges suggesting this isn't a safer option, I'll change my stance. But right now, I feel good about it as a safer alternative to fluoride.
If you're unsure, stick with xylitol. It works great and costs less.
Chewing Gum:
If you or your kiddos are prone to cavities or ear infections, xylitol gum can be a big help disguised as a treat!
Again, its antibacterial properties help kill harmful oral bacteria and, studies suggest, can also help control the bacteria that cause ear infections.
This is why you'll also find xylitol in nasal sprays. Cool huh?
As always, please look for gum sweetened with xylitol that contains no synthetic artificial sweeteners (saccharine, aspartame, etc.) like PUR.
Everyday Dental Floss:
For everyday flossing, look for PFAS-free dental floss (PFAS are forever chemicals you want to avoid) made with natural wax.
If your holistic dentist recommends hydroxyapatite, you can find hydroxyapatite-coated dental floss from brands like Boka and RiseWell.
For Deeper Flossing:
If you're dealing with gum disease, excess plaque between teeth, or other oral health issues, I definitely recommend investing in a Hydro Floss.
I've recommended this water-flosser for years because it works so well to improve gum health and blasts away plaque and other biofilms between the teeth.
It's also great for braces, combined with regular flossing.
Even if you use it just a few times a week, you'll notice a difference.
For Braces Prevention, Jaw Development, and Airway Support: Tooth Pillow
I haven't used this personally, but many clients have raved about Tooth Pillows for their children.
This relatively new dental appliance is a silicone insert, customized to your child's bite, that helps realign their teeth, support normal jaw development, address airway issues that may impact sleep, and may help prevent the need for braces.
They typically wear it for less than an hour a day.
It's best to start young, and it may not work for everyone, so if you're unsure, look it up and schedule a consult.
Given the discomfort, cost, and heavy metal issues with braces, it's definitely worth consideration.
For Mouthwash:
Traditional mouthwashes are like an antibacterial nuke for the oral microbiome, and best avoided unless you have an active infection.
However, for years, I've recommended Tooth and Gums Tonic for those with gum health issues.
It's made with natural essential oils that help stop unproductive bacteria while protecting the good stuff.
Also, a plain old baking soda rinse is an excellent way to alkalize the mouth before bed or after eating.
Just add about half to 1 teaspoon of baking soda to a small glass of water, then rinse.
