Shokhsanam Mubashirova expects to earn her degree in computer science from Hunter College in 2025, which will make her the first in her family to graduate college. As a first-generation student, Shokhsanam has faced many challenges — navigating higher education while juggling extracurriculars, part-time jobs and internships at Microsoft and Skillful.ly. She is also involved with America Needs You, a nonprofit that provides mentorship and career development opportunities for first-generation college students. After graduation, Shokhsanam hopes to secure a job in tech and apply the knowledge she has learned at Hunter to “innovative projects that will make a difference in the world.” |
What work are you doing now?
“Currently, I am actively working on expanding my coding skills and building a strong foundation in computer science. Despite the challenges I’ve faced, I am determined to persevere and make the most of my educational journey at Hunter College.”
What is something tangible and specific you would advise a current student to do to help their professional growth?
“Crafting a well-structured résumé that highlights your academic achievements, skills and any relevant coursework can make a significant difference in securing internship opportunities. Optimizing your LinkedIn profile with a professional photo and detailed information about your education and skills can help you stand out to potential employers. As you work on your résumé and LinkedIn, don't forget to create and practice your elevator pitch, a concise and compelling introduction of yourself, to confidently present yourself in job interviews.”
