Nancy Walker and Betty Alston

It is with great sorrow that I report the death of our sister, Betty Alston. In the picture above, Betty is on the right with her dear friend and neighbor, Nancy Walker. They had helped with Flowers for Graduates, and I snapped this picture. The picture to me represents the bond of friendship shared in Associated Women for Harding (AWH). She remained active in AWH until the end of her life by continuing to serve. She had a heart for students, worked hard to provide scholarships and gave many students a place to live when they desperately needed it. One of her biggest strengths was her ability to encourage. A letter or note from her was a great treasure. She leaves a wonderful legacy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our loss is heaven's gain. She will be missed, but is safe in the arms of Jesus.

Elizabeth "Betty" Louise Alston went to her Heavenly Home to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 9, 2012.  She was affectionately known to her Family as "Boo."  She was born to James and Kathleen Apperson on March 2, 1921 in Madison, Alabama.  Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Alston, Sr. and two siblings, Charles Apperson and Kathleen Williams of Madison, Alabama.

Betty loved and enjoyed working with children for over 20 years in Education, finishing her career at Harding Academy.   She loved spending time with her family, and from this she received her greatest joy.   Betty's home was always filled with love, laughter, and sharing stories.  She was always encouraging her family to remain steadfast in their walk with the Lord.   Betty was a faithful member of the College Church of Christ for over forty years.

Betty is survived by Son Dr. Jack Alston and wife, Becky,  of Tontitown, AR; Daughter Susan Barnes and husband Rick of Searcy; Daughter Mary Margaret Henson and husband Raymond of Sacramento, CA; Son Roy Alston and wife Cynthia of Framingham, MA; Seven Grandchildren, Cory Barnes and wife Christy of Shawnee, OK; Micah Barnes and wife Jennifer of Memphis, TN; Carolyn Donald-Alston of Atlanta, GA;  Matthew and Joseph Henson of Sacramento; Ashley and John David Alston of Tontitown; Two Great-Grandchildren Ella and Weston Barnes of Shawnee, OK; Brother; James "Buddy" Apperson and Sister Dora Tuck and husband Marcus along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at the College Church of Christ in Searcy, Arkansas with Dr. Jimmy Allen officiating.     A reception with the Family will be held immediately following.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Associated Women for Harding Scholarship Program and the International Healthcare Foundation.
