The eEagle
Dear Cathedral,
Its hard to believe, but Lent is upon us! In some ways, it feels like we entered the desert at the end of Lent 2020 and it never ended. But these upcoming forty days, we are given an opportunity to once more turn our focus to Christ and try out new spiritual disciplines. Lent can be a rich time of growth and learning. I invite you to join me!
The Cathedral is providing you with a robust menu of options for your Lenten practice: from classes to daily devotions to worship and service. Click this link to view the list of all that is offered. I have categorized these offerings according to the seven vital signs of the spiritual life: Prayer, Grouping, Giving, Serving, Worship, Learning and Work. Please chose something that will challenge and nurture you for these forty days.
Ash Wednesday, February 17, will be different during the pandemic. You will be given three choices for how to mark this holiday:

  1. The Cathedral will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for pilgrims who want to come in alone to self-impose ashes. Ashes will be available in small paper cups in the sanctuary. Please only use one cup per person and sanitize your hands before taking the cup.
  2. Socially Distant worship services will be offered in the Cathedral at 7 a.m., noon and 7 p.m. Please wear masks. Priests may assist you in the self-imposition with ashes.
  3. We will livestream the 7 p.m. worship for all who wish to worship virtually. The link for this worship service will be sent out on Shrove Tuesday and will also be available on our website.
Jesus went into the desert to pray. There he conquered the devil and became the fullness of who he was called to be. Let us meet him there.
In Christ’s love,

St. John's Youth to Sell Native Fresh Greens after Church
Our amazing youth are partnering with Native Fresh, a commercial aquaponics farm located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville and an initiative of FreshMinistries. The SJC Youth Group will be selling fresh greens and maybe some vegetables on Sunday mornings after each service. Look for them in the breezeway by the iron gates on Market Street. All funds raised will go towards scholarships for our youth to attend retreats and mission trips. We’ll be following all social distance protocols so please wear a mask.
