A New Cathedral Quarterly
|
|
Dear Cathedral,
This time of pandemic has been a fertile time in so many ways. Our Staff and Vestry have worked hard to increase our digital communication with you and we have embraced new technologies with speed. As a result, the function and purpose of the Cathedral Quarterly has been freed to become more scholarly.
This is a gift from God to us, for we now no longer need to include news in this publication. It can become a tool for formation and growth, a rich scholarly journal for your reflection and contemplation.
The theme of the next 18 months here at the Cathedral is Vital Signs. I believe that the spiritual life greatly resembles the physical life. We have vital signs when it comes to measuring the health of our physical bodies and COVID has taught us to pay close attention to these vital signs. The spiritual life as have vital signs and it is equally important that we pay attention to those signs, as they tell us about the health of our relationship with God.
What are the vital signs of the spiritual life? They are seven: Prayer, Giving, Serving, Learning, Worship, Grouping and Work. During the next few seasons, we will focus on each one of these themes, beginning with the theme of Prayer during Lent. Hence this Cathedral Quarterly is dedicated to one simple question: How do we pray?
I am pleased to present to you some deep and rich writing from our own clergy, this Diocese and beyond—available now online and in your mailbox soon. Let us explore what it means to pray.
In Christ’s love,
Kate+

Youth to Sell Native Fresh Greens after Church
|
|
Our amazing youth are partnering with Native Fresh, a commercial aquaponics farm located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville and an initiative of FreshMinistries. The SJC Youth Group will be selling fresh greens and maybe some vegetables on Sunday mornings after each service. Look for them in the breezeway by the iron gates on Market Street. All funds raised will go towards scholarships for our youth to attend retreats and mission trips. We’ll be following all social distance protocols so please wear a mask.

Learning to Pray: A Guide for Everyone by James Martin, SJ
In The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, Father James Martin included a chapter on communicating with God. Now, he expands those thoughts in this profound and practical handbook. Learning to Pray explains what prayer is, what to expect from praying, how to do it, and how it can transform us when we make it a regular practice in our lives.

The Kindness Rocks Project is a grassroots effort that shows how a small gesture can spark a global movement. To participate, paint a word or a short message on a smooth rock. Then the next time you take a walk in your neighborhood or park, leave that rock somewhere along the way. When you retrace your steps on another day, you may find that the rock was spotted by someone and has found a new home. Be sure to take pictures and post them to social media using the hashtag #KindnessSJC!
