Church installs sound panels at Eugene Field

Memorial Baptist Church identified a need and found a way to make a difference at Eugene Field through Bright Futures Poplar Bluff.

Congregation members fabricated dozens of sound panels and installed them in the elementary school gymnasium over the summer in order to improve the experience during annual community events like Leadership Day.

"Improving the sound was a pie in the sky type of idea that we never thought would be possible due of fiscal constraints," said Jennifer Taylor, Eugene Field principal. "Through the mission of Bright Futures and the contribution from Memorial Baptist, the sound quality has been greatly improved for students and faculty who are going to reap the benefits for years to come."

Memorial Baptist only paid a fraction of the estimated $18,000 the project would cost if done commercially, according to Family Pastor Tim Ingle. Church members tailored the cloth for the boards, which were constructed in Worship Pastor Scott Cheshire's shop. A lift was rented to attach the 36 panels to special piping hanging from the ceiling.

Senior Pastor Dennis Ward has been a member of the Bright Futures Advisory Board since the organization's foundation in 2014 with church representation on Eugene Field's Site Council. He said he did not know whether such in-kind contributions were welcomed until becoming involved with the nonprofit, which partners with churches, businesses, social service agencies and parents to meet the physical needs of students so they can focus on academics.

"Bright Futures brought the faith-based back in schools," Ward stated. "Then it was just about finding out how we can help, and showing up."

First Alumni Night well attended

A total of 59 Sho-Me Band alumni from the PBHS Class of 1964-2018 signed up to perform on the field prior to the football game on Friday, Sept. 14, at Mules Stadium.

The first such event, Alumni Night was organized by Debbie Winters, wife of Band Director Stephen Winters. Participants were supplied a T-shirt, spent an hour rehearsing the select songs, and were treated to a special dinner.

Firefighters talk careers with literature class

Firefighters visited the PBHS English Department on Friday, Sept. 14, to speak with seniors about how the themes they have been reading such as bravery, heroism and courage relates to the profession.

The British literature curriculum was reorganized this school year to include a college/career readiness component, according to instructor Jennie Randolph. The firefighters are the first of a series of guest speakers incorporated at the end of each unit of study, as opposed to holding a single career day.

"We are talking to members of our community that can emphasize how those themes relate to their career field, showing the students occupational paths not always highlighted, as well as how the literature we are reading is still relatable to the real world," Randolph explained.

Justin Maddock and Justin Moyers of the Poplar Bluff Fire Department discussed how they got started in the field, the certification process and what the day-to-day on the job is like.

"Are we heroes? I don't know; there's a certain amount of courage that goes into the job," said Moyers, a former U.S. Marine. "To me, something heroic is a decision you make at a certain time when you know you're gonna face life or death, but you do it anyway."

Maddock, who was serving as acting captain, added: "It's just what we do. If it wasn't us two, it would be two other people doing the same thing."

The firefighters work one day on, two days off, in 24-hour shifts. Their headquarters are similar to a three-bedroom/one-bathroom house with a two-car garage, they commented. Some days there are no calls, while other days there may be multiple structure fires they respond to. The work can be physically demanding, they agreed.

The firemen replied affirmatively when Leland Weaver, a student, asked whether the department ever receives requests to rescue cats out of trees. Maddock offered the class a tip: "When the cat gets hungry, it will come down from the tree. It's nature."

The students will follow-up on the activity by writing a reflection. The next theme is going to be ambition inspired by William Shakespeare's "Macbeth." Randolph said she and colleague Baily Koppelmann hope to book a legislator.

PBHS hosts bottle cap drive for shot at $10K

Poplar Bluff Senior High is competing for $10,000 against surrounding schools throughout the region in the Dr. Pepper Pigskin Points Contest.

The maroon bottle caps on associated products imprinted with football helmets are being collected through Friday, Dec. 14, in 50-gallon barrels located at Mules Stadium, in the PBHS front office or near the cafeteria stage. The Beta Club and the National Honor Society have teamed up to spearhead the contest to hopefully generate money for the student organizations.

"We are excited to see the community work together to help our school be successful in their contest," said Instructional Coach Stephanie Kuper, Beta Club co-advisor. "With so much money at stake, we really want to ask the community to help us increase our chances of winning one of the top prizes for our division."

Besides the grand prize, second place is $5,000 and third is $2,500. In addition, all participating schools in Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas will be entered into a random drawing for $500 to be awarded to three schools. Students also plan to participate in the accompanying barrel decorating contest for a chance to win another $500.

Qualifying products include Diet/Cherry/Dr. Pepper, Diet/7UP, Squirt, Crisp & Clear water; and Orange/Grape/Strawberry Crush. Pigskin Points caps can be found on 20-ounce, 16-ounce, 1-liter and 2-liter plastic bottles.

For additional information, contact Kuper at 573-785-6471.
