Academy donates bikes to Lake Road
Thirty new bicycles and helmets were awarded to students who have maintained perfect attendance at Lake Road on Friday, Dec. 15, during the elementary school's morning celebration.
The giveaway was part of Academy Sports + Outdoors' annual holiday bike donation program, a 15-year tradition of the national sporting goods chain.
"It's an opportunity to give back to the community around Christmas time," stated Gene Hux, Poplar Bluff store director. "This year Lake Road was first on our list."
The staff at Lake Road chose to use the donation as an attendance incentive. A total of 24 students who did not miss a minute of school during the first half of the year received the 20-inch Ozone bikes. The other six bikes were raffled off to any student who had completed a week with no absences or tardies, essentially giving the entire student body a chance to win.
Winners included My'Kia Blackmon, Kaden Calvin, Shane Clatt, Izayah Dugger, Tobi Duncan, Kendryck Dunkin, Gage Earnheart, Malik Gulledge, Michael Harris, Damon Hickson, Makenzie Hovis, Steffine Lacy, Gracie Laughlin, Daryise Lee, Aaliyah Mitchell, Abigail Nguyen, Alasia Sanford, Damien Sexton, Aiden Shearin, Austin Shearin, Avery Shearin, Somaria Simpson, Iazzack Starks, Sarah Stokes, Krista Thomas, David Tidwell, Payton Timothy, Geni Trial, Bristol Weadon and Eric White.

The 12th annual Jingle Jog of Oak Grove Elementary received much support from the community and school system on Friday, Dec. 15, as students demonstrated goal setting by running laps and helping those in need.
Students adopted the Mule Pack program as this year's cause, donating about 400 non-perishables to Chartwells School Dining Services plus raising an additional $140. The top fundraising students were awarded a sleigh ride with Santa and Mrs. Claus during the opening parade.
"This is the best day ever," exclaimed first grader Dakota Vest, as she enjoyed cookies and hot cocoa provided by Fellowship General Baptist Church. Santa Claus (played by Tim Ingle, husband of special education teacher Becky), was "not the real one" however, Dakota observed.
Also participating in the jog was Poplar Bluff Realty; The Dance Studio; River Radio; Girl Scouts; Parent Teacher Organization; Oak Grove Leadership and Glee Club; PBJHS Life Skills class; and the PBHS JROTC, Drumline, Choir and Pom Squad.

District-wide public speaking contest winner
Poplar Bluff High School senior Logan Dunlap won the Southeast District speaking portion of the 2017 Missouri Sheep Producers State FFA contest earlier this month at Osage Beach, later placing fourth at state.
The contest is designed to develop individual public speaking skills and to promote interest in and awareness of the many different aspects of the sheep industry, according to a press release issued by the organization. Logan's speech topic was sheep production in Missouri.
Logan is a senior FFA officer at PBHS with plans of running for state office, according to his sponsor Kathryn Clark, agriculture teacher. Last spring, he earned a group one rating at the state competition for extemporaneous speaking.

A tradition of the Technical Career Center, students dressed up and handed out candy canes to each of the students in the morning and afternoon programs, as well as at the Graduation Center (and even a UPS driver in between).
The tradition was instituted by HVAC/R instructor Ron Hedrick Jr., to spread a little Christmas cheer before the break.
