Student speaks before hundreds of educators

A 9-year-old Eugene Field student was selected to introduce the keynote speaker at a regional conference in front of 600 educators.

Third grader Makayla Cantu set the stage for Brad Montague, the mastermind behind YouTube sensation Kid President, on Wednesday, Feb. 7, during the 10th annual Leader in Me Symposium in St. Charles.

"If I can speak in front of this school, I can speak in front of everybody," Makayla exclaimed. "Because we're loud."

Asked how she remembered her speech without looking down at notes, Makayla replied that she was in fact reading. "I read the wall," she said, explaining how she looked past the stage lights and imagined the words.

Cindy Robertson, Makayla's second grade teacher, is the one who submitted the young student's name for consideration in the speaking role. Envisioning the words on the back wall is a trick Robertson uses to bring a sense of comfort when singing at church, she revealed.

"That's the way Makayla is," Robertson stated. "You have a little conversation with her and 'boom,' life goes on. She's a rockstar."

Makayla is a member of the media communications team at Eugene Field, which has achieved lighthouse status through The Leader in Me, the highest attainment under the cultural initiative. The communications team produces a daily broadcast of morning announcements featuring a weather report, the lunch menu and a school news item.

Sponsors of the team, guidance counselor Esther Luna and first grade teacher Jessica Thurston, were also invited to the conference to present about their broadcasts. The videos are attracting attention among LIM schools, especially considering the anchors are only in grades 1-3.

The break-out session offered tips on how video broadcasts can be created in front of a green screen with minimal editing if a template is used, according to Luna, who plays the role of executive producer. Thurston, the field reporter, says the broadcasts are important because they help students find their voice - the eighth 'habit' under the program.

"There's a way bigger picture to this. It's giving children an opportunity to showcase their skills," Thurston said. "It's become the norm to be pulled out of your comfort zone here. We're empowering kids to realize they do have purpose."

Makayla has spoken before the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs, presented during the Chamber of Commerce's first Friday coffee, and was chosen to represent the public education sector during a legislative forum held at the state Capitol.

Last year, Keaton Willcut of Eugene Field was selected to introduce keynote speaker John O'Leary during the LIM symposium in Independence.

January Athletes of the Month named

The Mules Booster Club has named Donielle Everts and Andrew Dugas of Poplar Bluff High School the January Athletes of the Month, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Andrew, a senior wrestler, has 15 pins with a 29-13 record this season, bringing his career total to 115-58. He was runner up at the Cape Tiger Classic tournament. In the classroom, he maintains a 10.1 grade point average.

"Drew sacrifices a lot of time and energy to be successful and reach team goals," said his coach, Kelton Thompson. "Drew is a good mentor to younger wrestlers and also serves as a youth wrestling coach."

Donielle, a senior basketball player, averages 13.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. She was named to the Mustang Classic All-Tournament Team in Hoxie, Ark. In the classroom, she maintains a 9.714 GPA.

"Doni has been a major part of our program," said her coach, John David Pattillo. "Her effort and determination playing the game of basketball is second to none."

Teacher performs with St. Louis Symphony

Elementary school music teacher Daniel Cox had the honor of performing alongside the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, promoting music in education, and representing the R-I district.

Cox was chosen among 90 music teachers in Missouri and Illinois to play in the special concert on Friday, Feb. 2, at Powell Hall, under New Zealand-born resident conductor Gemma New.

"Learning music in schools leads students to live a joyous lifestyle, one that can bring them through dark nights or scary situations," Cox wrote in an essay during the selection process. "I personally believe that when students sing daily, their overall mood improves, and that leads to higher performance in their studies."

Cox was only given two hours to practice playing the violin with the orchestra prior to showtime. Several of his school colleagues and family members accompanied him to express their support. The event was underwritten by Commerce Bank, allowing for free admission.

A teacher of vocal music at both Oak Grove and O'Neal, Cox has been employed by the Poplar Bluff School District for four years. He studied music at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, and is classically trained in violin and voice, with a K-12 vocal and instrumental music education certification.

Having been involved in orchestras in the past including the Quincy Symphony under Bruce Briney, Cox has always dreamed of playing with the SLSO. He said he will use the experience to show students that they can achieve their dreams too if they stay the course. He hopes the side-by-side concert becomes an annual tradition, celebrating music teachers.
