Beau McCormack of Poplar Bluff Middle School had been practicing every night for the Math Counts competition, according to his father David, First Baptist Church youth pastor.

The preparation paid off on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the Poplar Bluff Municipal Library, as the fourth grader won the annual multiplication contest, answering 63 problems correctly in two minutes, the highest number in recent years.

The competition via webmathminute.com was neck and neck this year with classmates Grant Hill, Jayden Massa and Ryder Hanks trailing close behind, according to officials. In order to become a finalist, the grade level vied in a series of qualifiers last month, at times giving up their recess period.

"Against so many children, it's hard to be a winner," said host Kathern Harris, who is the chairwoman over the Children & Youth Succeeding in School Committee, the sponsor of the event. "But you're all winners for making it here."

The committee, under the Butler County Community Resource Council, promotes learning activities like Math Counts and other initiatives including a spelling bee and the tutoring program at Wheatley School.

Communication efforts earn state honors

Poplar Bluff Schools won two statewide awards on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 2-3, during the fall conference of the Missouri School Public Relations Association in St. Charles.

The recently launched district website tied for first place and Mule Prints magazine received an award of excellence out of over 70 entries in nine categories submitted from schools across the state in the 2017 MOSPRA Communications Awards program.

"The MOSPRA Communications Awards program not only recognizes exemplary school public relations programs, but also provides valuable feedback from public relations professionals to help our members continue to improve their work," stated Paul Tandy, MOSPRA president. "Congratulations to this year's honorees on this well-deserved recognition."

Mule Prints is an annual collaboration between the district and the Daily American Republic that is distributed in the newspaper as well as to businesses and organizations throughout the community over the summer. The third installment of the publication received 95 out of 100 points from two PR professionals, both inside and outside of the public education arena, who were tasked with measuring against industry standards.

"Clearly an important newsletter for the Poplar Bluff community," one comment read on the evaluation. "Photography is top notch. Good composition; very flattering."

The website, www.poplarbluffschools.net, tied for first place with a district in Jefferson County, scoring 93 points respectively. Poplar Bluff launched its responsive website via SchoolMessenger on New Year's Day, followed by a mobile app in March, which can be downloaded for free in Apple iOS and Android stores by simply searching for the district name.

"The site looks sharp and is very easy to use," stated one of the judges. "It loads quickly, and works well on mobile devices."

Named an exemplary chapter under the national parent organization this year, MOSPRA is composed primarily of school public relations professionals, dedicated to providing citizens with a better understanding of the objectives, accomplishments and needs of the schools within its communities.

The Poplar Bluff School District has maintained membership with the nonprofit organization since its PR operation was established six years ago. The district previously received an award of merit in the writing category of the 2013 MOSPRA Communications Contest.

From 'cow to ice cream' grant

O'Neal Librarian Ashley Robertson was recently awarded $250 through the Missouri Farm Bureau Federation's Ag in the Classroom program designed to walk students through the 'cow to plate' process.

Under the grant entitled You Scream, I Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream: Cow to Ice Cream, third graders will learn about how beef and dairy products are processed. Robertson further noted: "Students will have the opportunity to turn ice cream to butter. The final project will involve eating ice cream to celebrate what we have learned."

Supplementary to the unit of study, the elementary school is receiving weekly updates about the growth of a calf and the dairy farm it lives on through an adoption program of the St. Louis District Dairy Council.

Trunk-or-Treat

Oak Grove Elementary had 30 vehicles volunteer to participate in Trunk-or-Treat on Tuesday, Oct. 31, including the fire, forestry, health and sheriff departments, Poplar Bluff Realty, and parents.

The event served as a monthly celebration under the state-wide positive behavior support program which the elementary school subscribes to, encouraging students to maintain high attendance and to follow their mantra of being safe, responsible and respectful.
