Elementary students lead recycling effort

A student-led effort at Lake Road is aimed at reducing the elementary school's carbon footprint

Students volunteer during breakfast and lunch to separate out food, liquid, plastic and cardboard in recycling bins supplied by Chartwells School Dining Services.

At the end of last school year, outgoing second graders went over a conservation unit in Jessica Burnette's class and later submitted their proposal to Principal Erica Weadon, who said she is in full support because of the awareness the community project is raising.

"We need your help because people are throwing away things that could be reused or recycled," the recycling group wrote. "Do you want to live in a world filled with trash?"

Students who volunteer to help their classmates dispose of their waste in the appropriate location are issued special vests for purposes of identification in the cafeteria. For their sacrifice, oftentimes giving up their recess period, they are rewarded cookies.

Some of the items are accepted at Ozark Foothills Recycling Center. Food Services Director Dixie Harden says she plans on applying for a grant in February to hopefully finance a compost at Lake Road.

Holiday surprise from soldier

Sgt. 1st Class Terry White of the Missouri Army National Guard surprised his fifth grade daughter Aaryn Johnson with an early return home on Friday, Dec. 8, during an assembly held as a diversion at the Middle School.

White returned with the 1-138th Infantry Regiment upon being deployed in the Arabian Peninsula of Qater since February, his fourth tour of duty, according to his wife Alexsa. He last saw Aaryn the day after Christmas of 2016.

"It's been a long year," he said simply, following an emotional reunion with his family.

The students, unknowing, were seated in the cafeteria and began to listen to Assistant Principal Angie Jackson give a speech about expectations when Terry White walked out of the kitchen area from behind Aaryn and tapped her on the shoulder. As soon as it registered who was standing before her through all the commotion of the students reacting, Aaryn gave her dad a welcoming hug.

"It just makes me feel so special," said Aaryn, face flush from the excitement, when it occurred the entire assembly was organized for her. The students in Aaryn's pod were treated to red, white and blue cupcakes before returning to class.

While the family has been able to communicate on occasion this year via FaceTime, according to friend Amanda Gowen, planning was tricky with the nine-hour difference between time zones.

Gowen commented that Alexsa is an amazing women, in the process of closing on a new house, working at a correctional facility and volunteering at a youth organization, all the while raising her children as her husband is overseas serving the country.

Earlier in the day, the couple surprised their eighth grade son Alex Clinton in a more low-key manner at Junior High.

Operation Warm

Members of the Poplar Bluff Fire Department donated over a dozen new winter coats to students at Eugene Field Elementary on Thursday, Dec. 7.

A partnership between the International Association of Fire Fighters and the nonprofit organization Operation Warm, local firefighters coordinated with the elementary school to determine the needs, according to Austin Armes, president of IAFF 2543.

"We are very fortunate to have received these coats," said Heather Taylor, school nurse. "The students were very excited to know that the coats came from the Fire Department and they were even more excited to meet the firefighters."
