Welcome new and returning students

The Poplar Bluff School District is delighted to have students back in the buildings! Judging by the smooth start, we believe it is going to be our best year yet.

Thank you to all the parents/guardians who posted hundreds of first day of school photos of their students on our district Facebook wall. Click here to view our running album, and be sure to 'like' your favorite shots!

Welcome new staff members

About 50 new teachers participated in a district orientation on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 7-8, in the Administrative Building.

The certified staff members received a program and policy overview, technology system training and benefits session. Afterward, the faculty met with their principals and were assigned designated veteran instructors, who will serve as mentors all yearlong.

All Means All

"All means all" was the theme of R-I Superintendent Scott Dill's state-of-the-school address at the annual convocation on Monday, Aug. 14, at the Black River Coliseum.

The statement served to affirm the district's mission - Achieving excellence through learning: Every child, every hour, every day.

Having the entire staff together - nearly 800 employees, Dill took the opportunity to announce this year's focus with major construction now in the rearview: to strengthen the district's PLC model, which stands for professional learning community.

"For my money, if there's a better way to improve performance, I have not found it," Dill stated, noting that it is the golden era of educational research.

A PLC is defined in school literature as an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.

Dill and his administrative team participated in a PLC Institute over the summer to brush up on the guiding principles in order to ensure the process is being implemented with fidelity from building to building, in light of routine turnover that has taken place.

The district initially engaged in the process several years ago, instituting Collaboration Day, contractual time built into the academic calendar for teachers to work together interdependently analyzing data and aligning curriculum in order to help individual learners excel.

"I see this as a retooling of what we're doing really well in a lot of places," said Dill, reflecting on his first year in Poplar Bluff. "We have to move past talking about my kids and start talking about our kids."

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education posted last week that this year's graduation rate for PBHS is 91.8 percent, an increase of 4.2 percent over 2016, and more than 13 percent since 2011. Dill commended the faculty on the substantial strides. Even still he pointed out there are about 8 percent of students not walking across the stage.

"The stakes are high, ladies and gentlemen," Dill concluded.

Prior to the address, faith partners united to deliver a prayer, the JROTC presented the colors and vendors raffled off prizes. Each principal introduced their new staff members. The convocation serves as a pep rally for employees as they enter a school year.

Super Kids

A total of 21 students earned certificates from Super Kids Camp on Friday, July 28, upon showcasing to attendees the character education they received at the historic Wheatley School.

Run by volunteers, including Poplar Bluff Junior and Senior High students, the enrichment program has operated for a few weeks following summer school over the past seven years. The service is available to upper and lower elementary students in Butler County.

MRTF awards $500 to Junior High

The Missouri Retired Teachers Foundation awarded $500 to the Junior High honors English program for curriculum materials associated with several literary classics, as well as mythology and poetry.

The proposal was written by eighth grade instructor Hilary Taylor, who is new to the department, and says the curriculum is being restructured with increased rigor. Project-based learning activities cited include modernizing passages and transforming stories into graphic novels, children's books and scripts.

"Students will rise to greatness, but they must be given that opportunity," Taylor wrote. "It is our job to facilitate those opportunities."

The MRTF awarded a total of $42,000 to teachers in Missouri, six grants per region. This was the first grant awarded to a Poplar Bluff instructor, according to organization representatives. Taylor said she was made aware of the opportunity by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Patty Robertson at the end of last school year.
