iThink Academy expands regionally
iThink Academy was opened up to surrounding schools for the first time this summer, attracting educators from several districts across Southeast Missouri.
About 80 teachers participated in the voluntary two-day workshop held Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 1-2, at the Poplar Bluff Middle School.
Topics of the 25 breakout sessions, led by building level ambassadors to the district instructional coaches, ranged from formative assessment tools to utilizing green screens.
This year Central Methodist University partnered with R-I to offer a graduate credit at a deeply discounted rate for attendees working to advance on the salary schedule through the professional development.

TCC students compete nationally at SkillsUSA
Poplar Bluff Technical Career Center students proved this summer that they are competitive in their respective trades not only in
Missouri, but on a national scale.
Eight top students vied in the National SkillsUSA Championship from Monday to Friday, June 25-29, in Louisville, Ky., placing as high as in the top five of the country. In addition, outgoing senior Luke Cook earned a $1,000 scholarship
from the mikeroweWORKS Foundation, based on an essay.
Hailey Garrett placed fifth in cosmetology; Nickalas Richards placed seventh in barbering, Jeramiah Gracia placed 14th in T-shirt design; Cook, Lane and Levi White, and Nick Loyd placed 20th in team works; and Lara Pierce placed 26th in esthetics, with Joselin Clark serving as her model. Building trades instructor Jody Cochran, SkillsUSA advisor, chaperoned the students during the Leadership and Skills Conference.

PBHS competitive at ACE Quiz Bowl Camp
Three PBHS Scholar Bowl members reportedly made it to the upper echelons of an intense camp competition in July at Eureka College near Peoria, Ill.
Ross Dare participated on a team that won one of the final showdown tournaments while Natalie Clark took home two medals, one for winning her room's individual tournament, and the other for being the only camper of over 100 to not miss a single question out of all the quizzes taken. "This is almost never accomplished at any of the six ACE summer camp locations," said Academic Team coach Gail Karlish, science department chairwoman.
Hannah Tuttle made it to the top level of the literature competition, but unfortunately was unable to participate in the final tournament due to falling ill on the last day of camp, Karlish noted. "Ross, Hannah and Natalie are now looking forward to helping their PBHS Scholar Bowl team have a winning 2018/19 varsity and JV season," she exclaimed.

Topographical maps brought to life
The R-I Instructional Technology Department fabricated an interactive 3-D topographical map as a summer project to help further engage students this year as they learn earth science concepts.
The augmented reality software was made available for free by UC Davis developers, who secured a grant through the National Science Foundation to teach about freshwater lake ecosystems. The IT Department first became aware of the AR Sandbox during a MOREnet conference.
Poplar Bluff Superintendent Dr. Scott Dill commended the staff for going above and beyond to enhance the learning experience for students even though their primary responsibility is to "keep the hardware going" in classrooms.
"To me, this is what true instructional technology is all about," said Chief Technology Officer Aaron Badgley, who constructed the box while Computer Technician Holden Jennings helped program the Xbox sensor. The mobile contraption holds 250 pounds of highly reflective sand that does not produce fine particle dust.
Middle School teacher Tana Bringer plans to kick off her STEM curriculum this month with the AR Sandbox, and then the hands-on exhibit will be available for faculty throughout the district to incorporate into lessons.

Bonus: Crossmen visit Mule Country
The Crossmen World Class Drum Corps, among of the top 10 best marching bands in the world for the past 15+ years, spent a full day this summer rehearsing at Mules Stadium.
The San Antonia-based drum corps arrived at PBHS on Thursday, June 21, with four charter busses of 150 performers and 40 staff members, plus three semi-trucks full of equipment as well as several support vehicles.
"Our band kids really enjoyed watching them perform last night which is the main reason I agreed to have them come,"
recapped Sho-Me Band Director Stephen Winters, who made the arrangements. "We could not have hosted them if our facilities weren't as great as they are."
