'The America I Believe In'

An estimated 75 servicemen and women including one vet from the greatest generation attended the annual Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, Nov. 11, at the Poplar Bluff Middle School.

Principal Dr. Brad Owings recognized Prtr. 2nd Class Robert L. Thacker, the great-great uncle of fifth grader Ian Pierce, for serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

In an essay entitled 'The America I Believe In,' sixth grader Bralin Duckett thanked Thacker along with all of the military and other public servants in the audience, saying their career choice is a calling, not just a job.

"The America that I believe in is a strong, independent, hard working country; a nation that is the pulse of the world; the nation that other countries believe we are; the nation that people from all over the world strive to reach for a better life," Duckett stated. "When America is healthy and strong, the world is a healthier and stronger place."

This year's keynote speaker was Melodie Summers, Gold Star mother of the late Staff Sgt. Eric Summers of Poplar Bluff who, along with three other Marines, was tragically killed while disposing of explosives at Camp Pendleton near San Diego in 2013.

Melodie said she can remember attending the Veterans Day Assembly at Middle School three years ago, and that was the last day she spoke to her son. In August, a portion of U.S. 67 through Butler County was named in Eric's honor.

The Veterans Day Assembly has been a tradition of the Middle School for the community since 1997. Junior High also held a program open to the public in the afternoon, featuring Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Kurt Dumey of the U.S. Coast Guard. Click here to see the coverage.

First doctoral program offered in Poplar Bluff

Poplar Bluff Schools-in partnership with Lindenwood University-is encouraging more local educators to earn the highest graduate degree attainable by bringing the first doctoral program to the community.

In addition to Poplar Bluff R-I educators, the initial cohort of students admitted includes teachers and administrators from Poplar Bluff R-I, Three Rivers College, Leopold and Cooter. While the two-year program is designed to serve a one-time need, the hope is for the collaboration to have long-term implications, according to officials.

"Any time people study their craft, they get better," stated Poplar Bluff Middle School Principal Dr. Brad Owings, "and we want more for our district and for our kids so Poplar Bluff will become an even better place."

Based in the Metro East, Lindenwood has begun a second cohort in West Plains, where Owings previously served, and the program has been the catalyst for numerous doctorates in that region in recent years. When Owings approached R-I Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Dr. Amy Jackson earlier this year with the notion of gauging interest here, she was immediately receptive.

"This was something I felt would be a wonderful opportunity for our staff as well as other schools throughout the entire area," Jackson said. "The goal is to be able to continue this opportunity for years so teachers and our administration can grow and learn."

Enrolled in the program from the R-I district are O'Neal IEP facilitator Susan Schalk, Middle School instructor Lori Ridens, High School math teacher Brandi Compass, and assistant principal Sheldon Tyler, also of the High School. The tracks include educational administration and instructional leadership, along with a higher education option.

The first set of courses, administrative decision making and 21st century issues in education, will be taught by Jackson and Owings respectively beginning in January at the R-I Administrative Building on North Westwood Boulevard.

"The beauty of the program is the people teaching are practitioners themselves," noted Dr. Terry Reid, Lindenwood director of graduate education. "There's no program convenient at all to Poplar Bluff. It's a great location because it's a regional hub for much of Southeast Missouri."

For more information about the doctoral program, email Reid at treid@lindenwood.edu.

The Mules Booster Club named softball standout Adrienne Stucker and football star Tyson Cox of Poplar Bluff High School the Athletes of the Month for October.

Cox holds the single game yardage record of 241, single season record of 1,313 and career receiving record of 1,884 yards, and he is only a junior. He was unanimously voted to first team All-Conference as a wide receiver. In the classroom, he maintains an 8.64 GPA.

Cox's head coach Mark Barousse called him a "great kid" and "hard worker," adding that he "always does what is best for the team."

Stucker, also a junior, ended the softball season 13-1 with an ERA of 1.77, pitching a total of 83 innings, while striking out 86 and only walking 10. She also maintained a batting average of .350 with 16 RBIs and three homeruns. She made first team All-Conference and All-District, and was the SEMO Conference Player of the Year.
