Veterans honored across the district

Poplar Bluff students had the privilege of learning firsthand about the meaning of Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 10, as servicemen and women were honored across campus.

A 20-year tradition of the Middle School-formerly the 5th & 6th Grade Center-the annual Veterans Day Assembly featured keynote speakers Sgt. Haley Cronk and Sgt. 1st Class James Stafford of the U.S. Army National Guard.

When Cronk was just 17 years old, she enlisted in the Army, and was deployed to Afghanistan the following year.

"The Army taught me what it means to be a leader," Cronk said to the student body. She described in one word the common thread of the 20 million plus living veterans who were driven to serve the country. "To be selfless means that we are bigger than ourselves and we will always put others above ourselves," she said.

Next, Stafford pointed out that it was particularly meaningful for him to return to E.T. Peters Gym where he graduated in 1994 before heading to the St. Louis Military Entrance Processing Station. He told students the significance of the Constitution, stating the doctrine is what makes America "special from all other countries in the world," and then spoke about the flag.

"The flag isn't just a piece of cloth and stitching, it represents our freedom," Stafford said. "It's not the government's flag, it's the people's flag. When the days are long and the nights are cold and the battle's tough, that's what helps us push through."

Veterans in attendance from all branches of the military were honored with a ceremony organized by the counseling department that included the posting of colors by the High School JROTC and a special musical performance by the Wind Ensemble.

At O'Neal, elementary students were encouraged to invite veterans if they had family members in the military. The keynote of the annual assembly was John Holland, a Vietnam War vet, who spent 21 years of his career in the U.S. Navy.

"[Veterans] write a blank check for their lives and have to defend their country," Holland told the students, noting that the last veteran of WWI died several years ago. "This battle flag has flown through the Pacific to Europe," he continued, as students were given small flags.

Third graders Makandah Buchanan and Emma Worley read a poem together that ended with the stanza: "Though we may not know each name, we thank each vet the same."

O'Neal paraprofessional Annette Wells, the president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 153, organized the event for the second year. She concluded the program by informing students that they had never been surrounded by more heroes than they were on that day. She then directed her attention to the veterans. "Heroes, wave to your future."

Carson honored as Unsung Hero

Middle School teacher Karmen Carson received the 2017 Unsung Heroes award of the Missouri School Teachers Association on Thursday, Nov. 9, in Columbia.

Nominated by field service coordinators, the award acknowledged about 30 members who made a "substantive yet unrecognized contribution" to the organization's mission: to advocate for and empower public educators so they can teach, according to the award letter.

"You've quietly served without any expectation of recognition," wrote Bruce Moe, MSTA executive director. "But we've noticed."

An educator of nearly 20 years, Carson has served as president of the Poplar Bluff chapter of MSTA since 2009. The MSTA is a state association made up of more than 47,000 educators.

Dr. Amy Jackson, R-I assistant superintendent of personnel, congratulated Carson, stating: "I am proud of your dedication and the work you do that is unnoticed by some, but not all!"

Dentist takes up collection for Giving Closet

Dr. Mike Price delivered several boxes of personal hygiene items to the Giving Closet on Thursday, Nov. 9, after taking up a month-long collection at his clinic, the Family Dentistry of Poplar Bluff.

One patient of the dental office included 24 bars of homemade soap with a note that read: "When I was in High School, my dad had a terrible accident and lost his left arm. We got a care basket during Christmas - it was all we had then."

Price said his hope is for beneficiaries of the Giving Closet to one day pay it forward when they are in a position to do so. The Giving Closet was established at the High School last year under the Bright Futures banner to help students in need with clothing, toiletries and classroom supplies.

Southeast Missouri All-District Band

Several High School band students were named to the Southeast Missouri All-District Band on Tuesday, Nov. 7, during an audition in Jackson.

Performing as members of the Jazz Band on Nov. 18 in Cape Girardeau, Zac Batton will serve as lead alto, Michael Ward - lead tenor, and Joseph Pickard will play the trumpet. In the Concert Band on Feb. 10 at Three Rivers College, Destiny Ackerman will play the flute and Breeanna Helton will play clarinet. Cody Daughertee has been selected to play the trumpet in both the Jazz and Concert Band.

Band director Stephen Winters said the students worked hard on their music, some practicing for six months.

October Athletes of the Month

The Mules Booster Club has selected Bailey Edmundson and Preston Burroughs of Poplar Bluff High School as the October Athletes of the Month, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Preston, a senior, was the offensive lineman for Mules Football during its undefeated regular season, helping the team average 34.6 points per game. He was a starter for three years and was named to the All-Conference team. In the classroom, Preston maintains a 7.78 GPA.

Preston's coach, Mark Barousse, called him a "great young man," noting that he excelled as an athlete despite overcoming ACL surgery on his knee.

Bailey Edmundson, a sophomore, helped lead the Competition Cheerleading Team to win second in states the past two years, during which the Universal Cheerleaders Association named her an All-American. This year she also received All-State recognition at the competition of the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association. She has an 11.071 GPA.

"Bailey goes above and beyond to help others on the cheerleading squad," coach Stephanie Hillis said. "She has knowledge of the sport and a passion for it that truly helps to lead the squad. Bailey is an awesome athlete and someone who has a good disposition about her."
