Surprise Baby Shower at Senior Send-Off!
by Sarah Baldwin, Youth Leader
|
Our last senior high night of the ’23-’24 youth group season was marked by surprises, laughter, tears, and amazing fellowship! Our sweet youth groupers threw me a surprise baby shower. I went home with bags of books for Baby Baldwin! My husband and I are so excited to read our son all the wonderful stories that we were gifted.
After the gifts, we had a classic boy-versus-girl relay race––baby shower style! Kids had to taste various baby foods and chocolate bars and guess what flavors they were. Did I mention the baby food and chocolate bars were in diapers?

Diaper Drive and “Saturday Serve”
Bless Lowcountry Pregnancy Center
Last week’s diaper drive was a huge success! Thank you, St. Philippians, for answering the call to help out one of our home mission ministry partners, Lowcountry Pregnancy Center (LPC), which provides life-affirming reproductive health and family services in a compassionate Christian environment. And on Saturday, 12 St. Philippians headed over to the LPC office in North Charleston for the Home Missions Team’s May “Saturday Serve” offering.
After unloading donations from the diaper drive, the volunteers took a tour of the LPC facility, getting a feel for the comfortable, welcoming, and loving environment that LPC provides for their clients. They saw the parenting classrooms, ultrasound rooms (where many choose life after hearing baby’s heartbeat), counseling rooms (where many hear the gospel for the first time), and the baby boutique, where clients can shop for free baby essentials after attending a certain number of parenting classes––and where there was an abundance of items Baby Bloomers recently donated after our own Sandra Anderson just happened to mention LPC to the Baby Bloomers owner at a cocktail party!

In Honor of Monti Hanger
Churchgoers this past Sunday may have noticed that the Rev. Andrew O’Dell was wearing a beautiful new vestment during the processions: a white damask cope with a golden stole, embroidered with an Agnus Dei.
What you may not know is that this beautiful vestment was a gift to St. Philip’s from Callie McLaurin in honor of Monti Hanger. Callie and Monti faithfully headed up the Compassion Committee for 15 years before handing the reins over to Sherrie Wallinger and Jane Galis in December 2023.
Callie let the clergy know in December that she wanted to give the church a gift in Monti’s honor, and she learned that a cope (which she shared was a new noun for her––and probably most people reading this) would be special. The clergy and others collaborated on a design, and since it was custom-made, it took several months to produce.
“This cope is given in honor of Monti and my love for her,” said Callie. “Being new at St. Philip’s and in Charleston, she gave me a blessed start.”
Thank you, Callie, for your generous gift, and our utmost thanks to you and Monti for your years of selfless service to the ill, home-bound, and grieving people in our St. Philip’s family.

Yes, That's What People Who Study Mollusks Are Called...You Didn't Know? | |
Just what was this snail doing hanging out on Juli's window yesterday (and the day before...and possibly for even longer than that)? Well, we're not malacologists, and we're not 100% sure where snails keep their eyes or how to tell where they're looking, but surely Mr. Snail has either been keeping watch over Juli's office (perhaps even while she was in Scotland) or he's been keeping an eye (and somewhat safe distance) from the bird feeder that sits in the Tea Garden courtyard outside of Juli's window.
Either way, it sounds like we've got yet another eager beaver looking for some part-time work. But...why did he wait until EVERYTHING went into summer recess before coming around here looking for a job?
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about Mr. Snail's job search. But if this is news to you, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and all the latest staff news?
