A Revolution at St. Philip’s: Past and Present

by Barbara Bellows Rockefeller,

Classical Christian School Planning Committee

“Nothing is more self-evident, than that we are a system of beings, related to, and dependent upon one another. We cannot subsist, in any order, or with any comfort, without one another’s concurrence and support.”––The Reverend Robert Smith, 1768.

The American Revolution liberated the colonies––but devastated the Anglican Church in America. One of the first casualties of the conflict was the St. Philip’s School. The Bishop of London and its founder, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG), immediately cut off all their vital support. South Carolina’s disestablishment of the provincial Anglican Church in 1778 slashed public contributions. Private donations dried up with the exigencies of war. Teachers and clergy unwilling to denounce the King, titular head of the Church of England, were banished from the province. The parish school fell into total disarray.

At the time the British occupied Charleston in 1780, their commander denounced “the neglected and deplorable state of the education of the youth in the province” due to the “late usurpation” by the American rebels. Attempts were made by the occupiers to restart what was by then being called the Provincial Free School, but only if Loyalists could be found to teach the principles of Grammar, Greek, and Latin.

When victory came at last for the Americans in 1782, St. Philip’s parish was saved from the utter disintegration visited upon so many Anglican churches because its rector, the Reverend Robert Smith, unlike the majority of the Anglican clergy in America, had sided with the patriot cause. Having himself been banished during the British occupation, he eventually returned home to a hero’s welcome from his greatly reduced congregation.

Shine the Light Campaign Report

by Maybank Hagood, Shine the Light Campaign Co-Chair

Campaign Background: Our Shine the Light Campaign is St. Philip’s first capital campaign in twenty-five years. St. Philip’s is undertaking a significant effort to preserve our historic Gospel assets and equip our campus for God’s call to St. Philip’s to be a light to our community and the world. Our last campaign, the 5th Century Fund, allowed us to renovate the Parish House and church offices, two facilities vital to our current daily ministries and operations. Today, our Shine the Light Campaign envisions a complete restoration of all facilities at our campus.

Our church family uses close to 75% of the entire block bordered by Queen Street, Church Street, Cumberland Street, and State Street. What a blessing! We also have our own parking lot and use of the county parking garage for worship services (into perpetuity). In addition to the physical restoration of our historic campus, a portion of the Shine the Light funds is to go towards mission, and we announced in May our plans to establish a classical Christian school. We own the 15,000 square-foot building on the corner of State and Cumberland Streets, and our plan is to convert it from an income-producing property to another Gospel asset, as it will house the school and will also provide flexibility during our campus renovation. The Classical Christian School planning committee is diligently researching and preparing, and there will be much more to share this fall.

Fall Prevention Reminders!

A note from Parish Nurse Susan Keller

  • Secure all rugs and mats with non-slip backing or pads
  • Be sure no rugs have uneven or raised edges
  • Keep common pathways free of clutter
  • Always be aware of where your pets are
  • Install grab bars by toilets and in showers (now there are some that can be secured to the wall without drilling)
  • No walking in socks on slippery floors!
  • Be aware of side effects of any new medications
  • Turn on a light before getting out of bed or have a night light
  • Stay in shape! Core and muscle strengthening are the best for balance

Sponsor a Citadel Cadet!

Provide a “home away from home” for international and out-of-state cadets

This program is intended to improve cadets’ quality of life by providing the international and out-of-state cadets a means to connect with vetted, local volunteer families that will provide them with a place to go to during times of general leave and/or furlough. Most cadets requesting sponsors will be 4th Class cadets (freshmen), but international students from all classes may also request sponsors.

Pray for our travelers!

As our St. Philip's brothers and sisters wrap up their Celtic pilgrimage and make their way back home, please lift them up in prayer:

O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel, especially those on the Celtic Christianity pilgrimage; surround them with thy loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Because "Director of Music and Organist and Party Planner" and "Associate Director of Music and Organist and Carpenter" Don't Fit on the Back of the Bulletin...Or In This Headline, Really.

You may look at a title like "Director of Music and Organist" or "Associate Director of Music and Organist" and think to yourself, "That guy probably plays the organ and is in charge of music!" (Or is a close associate of the guy in charge of music.)

But you'd be only partly right. Because while Chris Walchesky and Paul Reese DO both play the organ and handle music "stuff" at St. Philip's, there is just so much more to their jobs! You probably know that they plan out extras like the praise team summer reunion two weeks ago or the open choir invite coming up on the 11th, but did you know that Paul Reese handles various carpentry needs around the office and that Chris Walchesky can throw a birthday celebration with as much enthusiasm and gusto as one Dwight K. Schrute?

If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you DID already know that there's more to the music department than music. But if this is news to you, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and all the latest church office news?
