This Week's Happenings

SUNDAY:

Second Installment of Special Rector's Forum Series

God’s Revelation: Creation and Redemption

Remaining sessions: March 17 and 24 ~ 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall

God, by his Word, through his Word, spoke into existence all that is. In so doing, he clearly revealed himself to all mankind through that creation. But “His Story” was not yet complete. When the time was right, that same Word became flesh, dwelt among us, died, and rose again, opening a door we could not: our redemption. Join us for this special Rector's Forum series as Alan Runyan leads us in this journey from creation to the Cross.

The 100th Anniversary of the Charleston Premiere of John Stainer's "Crucifixion"

Palm Sunday, March 24 ~ 5:00 p.m.

On Palm Sunday evening, St. Philip's choirs will present Sir John Stainer's (1840-1901) Crucifixion: A Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer. Some of you may be familiar with this large work as it was once regarded as an "institutional piece" and part of a regular Holy Week tradition at St. Philip's and other churches in Charleston. This year marks the 100th anniversary of its Charleston premiere, which occurred at St. Philip's in March 1924. To further celebrate this venerable piece of the Anglican tradition, we will use Barry Rose's (b. 1934) orchestration composed for performance in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. Mark your calendars for this once-in-a-lifetime event!

Canterbury and St. David Choirs Sing for

St. David’s Society Annual Great Feast

by Zippy Hood, Director of Children's Choirs

On Thursday, March 7, our Canterbury and St. David choristers sang for the St. David’s Society’s Annual Great Feast––the 22nd time our singers have been in attendance since 2000!

Twenty-three talented musicians represented our church under the direction of Zippy Hood, accompanied by Paul Reese. The children opened with a traditional a cappella arrangement of William Byrd’s “Non Nobis Domine,” which is intended as a blessing prior to a meal. Then, they sang Mary Ann Cooper’s “What Wondrous, Marvelous Love,” which was also Sunday’s offertory anthem.

The St. David’s Society made a special request for the closing song: the Welsh National Anthem––sung in Welsh. This was quite a challenge for our singers, as Welsh is “one of the toughest Western European languages to master and is even harder than Swahili,” according to a 2016 study reported by the North Wales Daily Post, which further reported that “at 1,040 hours, learning Welsh takes nearly double the time than it does to become fluent in French, which at 550 hours is one of the easiest of languages examined.”

Tea Room Craft Night

When Caroline Fitzgerald and Molly Hare were planning Monday’s Tea Room craft night, they were hoping to have 10 to 15 sets of helping hands to assemble oyster beads––and when last-minute registrations pushed that number to 25, Caroline made plans to stretch the food, adding a salad and a few snacks to complement the pizza, and hoped it would be enough. But when the final participant walked through the Parish Hall doors and took a seat, there were 45 people sitting around the tables, smiling and laughing as they chatted and strung the beads––and they didn’t run out of food OR supplies!

“It looked like there weren’t going to be enough oyster shells,” said one participant, “but it actually took longer to string the beads than you’d think, so one or two per person worked out perfectly.”

Molly, who gave the ladies their instructions and a little something to talk about while they worked (the parable of the Pearl of Great Price from Matthew 13 and their own examples of a pearl of blessing from God), was thrilled with the turnout and the fellowship, saying, “What a glimpse of ‘on Earth as it is in Heaven’!”

These beautiful oyster beads will be available for purchase at the Tea Room gift shop, which will be open daily April 22–26 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Do you have new or handmade boutique-style items you’d like to donate? Drop them by the church office any time before opening day. For gift shop ideas and volunteer sign-up, click the link below!

Pray for the People of Haiti

by Susan C. Keller,

World Missions Committee Chair

Our Lord loves the people of Haiti. Brothers and sisters, please pray for them. The tragic situation of gang warfare, which has been worsening month by month since July 2021 with the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, has now reached new levels of chaos, violence, and disarray. 80% of the capital city is now controlled by criminal groups. Schools and businesses are closed. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Police stations have been torched and the police are desperate for help.

Just Ask!

The diocesan convention was last weekend in Bluffton, and what an exciting time it was (and not just because it fell on Father Brian's birthday––which he shares with three other diocesan priests!)! Bishop Edgar welcomed new clergy members (including our own Doug Ringer, who was ordained as a vocational deacon earlier this year), and three St. Philippians were elected to various diocesan committees: Bob Kunes to the Standing Committee, Joanna Macmurphy to the Diocesan Council, and Fr. Brian to the Ecclesiastical Court. AND the diocese rolled out a beautiful new diocesan seal!

But perhaps the most exciting thing to come out of the convention was the knowledge that if you want your rector to be on duty as assistant event photographer (under Suzanne McCord), you need only ask––although it does help to be a little pitiful and mention how none of the clergy sent pictures last year. It was so fun to see the convention through the eyes of our rector, whose pictures included a group pic of the Sisters of St. Mary (Anglican nuns), and a great pic of the crowd, stage, and the big screen, which was showing our new seal!

If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew this exciting assistant event photographer news. But if you hadn't heard, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and the most exciting office news?

Sunday's Readings

Collect for the Fifth Sunday in Lent:

Almighty God, who alone canst order the unruly wills and affections of sinful men: Grant unto thy people, that they may love the thing which thou commandest, and desire that which thou dost promise; that so, among the sundry and manifold changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Readings for Sunday:

  • Jeremiah 31:31-34
  • Psalm 25:3–9
  • John 12:20-33
