A Brief Introduction to Classical Christian Education
by Trisha Reese, Classical Christian School Planning Committee
|
Within the word “educate” is a hidden story that takes us all the way back to the ancient Roman Empire, and then to the Greeks, and even further back to the ancient Hebrews. The word comes from two Latin words: ex and ducare. When put together, they mean “to lead out.”
The Greek philosopher Plato described education as the process of liberating mankind from a prison of darkness, staring at shadows and thinking they were real, to being led out into the sun to see all that was actually true, good, and beautiful. The Apostle Peter, quoting from the book of Deuteronomy, reminded the early Christians that they were “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that they may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” When the plot of education is lost, the stakes in education are high: lie vs. truth, ugliness vs. beauty, prison vs. freedom, darkness vs. light. As St. Philip’s plans a new classical Christian school, our prayer is that this story of education will best prepare, protect, and lead out the next generation to proclaim the excellencies of Him who calls.

St. Philippians Bless Star Gospel Residents With Steak Dinner and Financial Support
by Gantt Folline, Home Missions Team Chair
Several of the men and women of the Home Missions Team had the blessing of serving a steak dinner—complete with salads, Texas toast, baked potatoes, and cheesecake—and sharing fellowship with the guests of Star Gospel Mission on Monday, June 3. A band of brothers (Briggs Huddleston, PJ Kuyler, Scott Wallinger, Lee Batchelder, Rhett Smith, Jason Ayers, and I) pulled together to acquire the food at The Chef Store, and we prepared the meal in the Parish House kitchen.
It was an honor to serve these men of the Kingdom, watch them break bread, to have some fellowship, to get to know several of them, and share some stories. My heart is speaking and I want to write it down. If I could pull those men aside, I would tell them this banquet is only the beginning. Preparations are being made for a far Greater Banquet—a Wedding Feast—and they are all invited.

A Journey to the Heart of the Reformation
by the Rev. Justin C. Hare
For two weeks in the middle of May, I was honored to join several other ACNA clergy and lay leaders in Wittenberg, Germany, to study in the same university halls which once held the likes of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon. This two-week course of study in the Wittenberg Center for Reformation Studies was a key component of the Anderson Trane Fellows program, a new fellowship created by the American Anglican Council (AAC) designed to train future leaders in the ACNA by “enhancing the fellows’ seminary studies and providing them with opportunities to pastorally apply their fellowship training in the churches and other mission contexts in which they serve.” With one of the goals being “to build a network of future colleagues and connect them with willing mentors who will resource them into their future,” fellows represent dioceses across the ACNA.
So why Wittenberg, Germany?

Introducing Our First Parish Nurse: Susan Keller
New Ministry Launching at St. Philip’s
The Vestry of St. Philip’s Church is pleased to announce a new ministry: parish nursing! Susan Keller, RN, will be serving in this volunteer position.
A parish nurse, now commonly known in other churches as a faith community nurse, is a registered nurse who acknowledges spiritual care as an essential component of caring for the health of a person within the context of a church community. This return to our Christian roots of caring for the whole person––body, soul, and spirit––began in the 1980s and now has grown to include many thousands of parish nurses across the nation. There are currently 56 such nurses in South Carolina.

Who Will Count the Votes? | |
Remember when we called out Mr. Snail in the last eSPIRE for begging for a job and then falling off the face of the earth?
Well, either he's on our email list or someone forwarded the eSPIRE to him (before you ask, YES!! Of course this is the same snail!! And no...of COURSE this is not merely a coincidence!!!), but on the very morning that eSPIRE went out, he was busy decorating one of the first-floor office windows with a very intricate free-form pattern, waiting to tell his side of the story and pleading for another chance at joining the St. Philip's workforce.
Now, we all know that summer is when things slow down in the church office for a bit. We administrative staff are a bit underwhelmed by his level of commitment to the job, though, and we worry that if we bring him on now, he may simply disappear when the pace ramps back up in the fall. Thoughts? Job for Mr. Snail yea? Or nay?
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about about the return of Mr. Snail. But if this is news to you, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and all the latest church office news?
