Answered Prayers Close Out Tea Room Week |
It seems to take a few days every year for the Tea Room word to spread, and while it can be nice to ease back into the routine (which one is table 28 again? can you get the curried chicken salad as a sandwich? what happens when someone wants to buy an orchid?), our Tea Room is a fundraiser for our missions and ministries, and we need customers––and desserts to sell to those customers!
Above left: Four nurses from Ohio who always plan their annual girls’ trip to Charleston around the Tea Room dates.
|
On Tuesday, the Tea Room Committee put out the call for more desserts––especially Huguenot Torte––and our St. Philip’s family, including Marnie Bibee (pictured here following the Huguenot Torte recipe directions she read herself), answered!
And during the opening blessing on Thursday, the Rev. Andrew O’Dell prayed that the people would come. “Oh boy, did the Lord provide!” wrote Tea Room co-chair Amanda Ayers in that evening’s email to volunteers. “We were slammed, full tables inside and out, for at least two hours.” She went on, “Honestly, this is how it has been throughout this entire Tea Room season––any time we have had a worry or a need, we asked, and God answered. It really has been amazing. He is a God who listens to us and is so, so good!”
Thank you to the everyone who lent a hand this year, whether you helped serve the customers, made dessert, donated to the gift shop, or came and dined with us––Tea Room 2024 was a success because of you!

Lowcountry Fellowship of Christian Athletes Annual Banquet
St. Philip’s was well represented with three tables at the annual Lowcountry FCA banquet, held Monday, April 22, at Trident Technical College in North Charleston. Attendees heard from Jessica Kolp, author of Leaving It All on the Field: How My Faith and Sports Training Restored My Life, and learned about how God is moving through the FCA ministry.

A new booklet, available now in the church office, gives an overview of each of these ministry partners, as well as a comprehensive list of ways for you to get involved either individually or with your family or friends.

Foyer Groups Open Door to True Community
by Jill A. Settle
My husband, John, and I were both raised in the church––John as a lifelong St. Philippian, while I officially joined St. Philip’s six years ago. We had not experienced true community until we began actively engaging with our church family. Through serving, studying God’s Word, and sharing meals, our faith has grown in ways we didn’t expect. Our worship is more meaningful, as we have continued to “do life” with fellow parishioners.
On Sunday, we concluded our fifth (or sixth) round of foyer group dinners. While we are a little melancholy when they come to an end, we look forward to what’s ahead. These gatherings have given us joyful opportunities to build community and get to know parishioners in all stages of life, many of whom have become our dearest friends. Foyer groups are an expression of “agape love” in its truest sense.

Twinning Is Winning at the Tea Room!
When Martha Vetter arrived at the Tea Room last Wednesday for her hostess shift, she was delighted to see Sallie Robinson, whom she fondly remembers as Sallie Bennett, one of her students from her days of serving as St. Philip’s Director of Christian Education. But what made their meet-up extra fun was that they were dressed almost exactly alike!
Below: Sallie with her younger siblings.

The Rev. Andrew R/ O'Dell is preaching at our services of Holy Eucharist at 8:15 a.m. and Holy Eucharist and Baptism at 10:30 a.m. Sunday school for children of all ages begins at 9:15 a.m., and the Rector's Forum begins at 9:30 a.m. | |
When a mystery insect appeared in the church office last week––and presenting it to other members of the staff elicited "ew!" and "gross!" instead of the hoped-for "Oh, look at that [fill-in-the-blank]!", it was off to Google we went. (After first releasing it into the Tea Garden courtyard behind the church office, of course.)
And the prickly little creature turned out to be...a ladybug! In its larval stage. Who knew that ladybugs didn't just spring into existence all spotted and dainty and capable of making folks go "ooooooooh" instead of "ewwwwwwww"? Not we.
If you follow St. Philip's on social media, you already knew about this little larva's indoor adventure. But if you hadn't heard, why not take a minute right now to give us a follow so that you, too, can be among the first to hear about schedule changes, special events, and all the latest insect news?
