October 2025

Welcome!

Welcome to the first edition of our Animal Tales e-newsletter. This digital newsletter is a continuation of the printed Animal Tales newsletter we’ve produced for over 15 years. Each month, we’ll share pet-related information, updates from Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter and, of course, a few cute photos!

Stay safe this spooky season

Halloween can be both fun and frightening! Take some time before trick-or-treaters arrive at your door to consider how you’ll keep both your pet and costumed visitors safe during holiday festivities. Check out these tips from the American Veterinary Medical Association on making Halloween a safer holiday for pets.

Join us on November 19 for the Animal Services Academy!

The goal of the Animal Services Academy is to help community members understand how Washington County Animal Services and the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter work, as well as to empower people to share animal-related resources and information with friends, neighbors and online networks. Attending the Academy is also the first step for those interested in volunteering with us!

This free training covers everything from what happens to animals while they are at the shelter to how you can personally help lost pets get back home. We’ll also talk about the work Animal Services Officers do, how we collaborate with other local organizations, veterinary medicine in our shelter, and disaster preparedness for pet owners.

Join us for the next Animal Services Academy taking place Wednesday, November 19 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in downtown Hillsboro.

Out and about with Animal Services

At three recent events, our staff and volunteers answered pet-related questions, offered information about our services and challenged those who stopped by our booth with Animal Services-themed trivia. We love meeting people (and their pets!) while they are out having fun. Keep an eye on our social media or future editions of this newsletter for info on where to find us next!

Young visitors spin the Animal Services trivia wheel at the Washington County K9 Trials in May.

Little Maury might have been the best-dressed visitor to strut up to our table at the Barksboro event that took place at the Hillsboro Tuesday Night Market in June.

A canine visitor posed in front of our table at the Canine Community Carnival while his human chatted with one of our volunteers.

We love helping lost pets get back home!

Each year, we reunite hundreds of animals with their families. When a stray pet arrives at our shelter, our number one goal is to get them back to the people who know and love them. If your pet ever goes missing or you find a lost animal, our website has resources to help you

Thor, Angel and Daisy were reunited with their person at the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter back in August. What a pack!

We also love licensing dogs in our community!

We license thousands of dogs each year. A license tag provides your dog with identification that can help get them back home if they are ever lost. Plus, the money collected from licensing helps us provide important services for animals in the county. Washington County dog licenses can be purchased in person, online, by mail or over the phone.

Two of our friendly and knowledgeable administrative specialists, Nicki and Jenna, pose with Mickey and Morgan. This delightful doxie duo stopped by the Bonnie Hays Animal Shelter with their human for licensing services.

Want to help animals in need?

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to support the work we are doing for the people and pets in Washington County. Donations help us continue to reunite lost pets with their families, rescue stray and injured animals, investigate animal abuse and neglect, and provide veterinary care for animals temporarily staying with us. Thank you!
