Creative pursuits are often the most fun, AND the most messy. Remember art class in elementary school? I remember we all loved our art teacher "Mrs. Smith." (not her real name.) (Mrs. Smith, wherever she may be, was a SAINT.).
We could really let loose in her class. Get messy. Get our hands dirty. We would put on our smocks over those Catholic School uniforms that looked so prim and proper, and really just start the papier-mache assembly line, often resulting in someone flinging that goopy mess at another person, half of us laughing, someone getting gluey newspaper water in their eyes, someone going to the principal's office, and Mrs. Smith getting so angry and red faced that I remember one time she grabbed a kid by the collar and slammed him up against the lockers like, "what the hell is wrong with you, kid?!?! DO YOU WANT ME TO CALL YOUR MOM RIGHT NOW?!"
When she had her last day I remember more than one student crying. She loved us all so much and helped us have so much fun, but often she was the first one to rattle us if we got out of line. (This was the 80's - a teacher could still do that.). She was usually there with a big hug and a smock full of paint and some construction paper in her hair.
WE LOVED MRS SMITH! She made school fun. Sometimes we had "too much fun." AND MADE A HUGE MESS.
Life is a bit like that. Sometimes the most fun and memorable things are the result of a huge sense of chaos and disorganization, tools, scraps, assorted pieces we used or didn't use, labor, sweat, laughter and tears. The enormity of what we might be about to begin can scare us. The thought of disappointing someone we admire might scare us also. Although we might really just be worried about getting construction paper in our hair.
Then the dust settles. The cloud of flour, sawdust, sugar, construction paper, baking soda and the 10,000 pieces of hardware we needed to put together the "assemble yourself" table are moved to the other side of the room and we can kinda see it - that thing we have been working on. It's starting to take shape! It's starting to look good.
Whenever we create something new, for a period of time, EVERYTHING is going to feel messy, look messy, and just BE messy. But that doesn't mean it will stay that way.
