Winter wraps a cozy blanket around us as the longest night and shortest days of the year are upon us. This time of year finds many of us busy preparing for parties, shopping for last minute gifts, finishing tasks at work or school before winter break, or perhaps traveling to see loved ones. For some of us the holidays are difficult, and grief might feel heavier than ever. With so much going on around us it's easy to forget the gentle gift Winter Solstice quietly offers to each of us.
As the Earth and Sun perform their Celestial Dance, just before Winter bids farewell to make room for Spring’s arrival...just before the cycle of seasons begins again to burst into existence and new life, there is a stillness in winter's darkness. You might pause right now to see if you notice it, in this moment.
In this moment imagine the end of an exhale when the tension falls away to open the space for a new breath. Or as a pendulum reaches its highest point and seems to pause - suspended in stillness - just before beginning to swing again. There is stillness in this empty space void of light, waiting to be filled with your visions and prayers of hope and beautiful new possibilities.
The brilliance of the seasonal celestial dance never fails to bring renewal after winter’s decay. A new breath, new leaves, and new blossoms are sure to come as the light returns.
