The Global Arakanese Community Joint Statement Condemning Violence in Burma

Since the military coup took place in Burma on February 1st, more than 200 protestors have been killed and nearly 2000 arrested by the army. As the daily demonstrations by opponents of the coup continue to intensify, the army has in turn escalated its use of force by firing live ammunition into the masses. The deadliest assault by the army took place this month which resulted in numerous killings and the storming of neighborhoods presumed to be supportive of the protesters.
The deliberate killing of peaceful protestors is a calculated measure by the army to suppress the voice of activists of democracy and to instill fear in the civilian population. The current situation has the potential to exacerbate the existing human security challenges in Arakan state and across Myanmar as hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons lack urgent humanitarian aid assistance.
The global Arakanese Community continue to stand with the people of Burma. We unequivocally condemn violence perpetrated against peaceful protesters, including women and children. We are deeply concerned about the current restrictions on medical personnel, civil society, labor union members, journalists and media workers, and call for the immediate release of all those detained arbitrarily. We call on the international community to show true solidarity with the people of Burma, to hold those accountable for committing gross human rights violations, to increase pressure on the Burmese Military to cease the conflict in Rakhine State and around the country, and to fully promote the restoration of peace and democratic consolidation in Burma.
