Dear #Positivity Friends,

From September to March each year, Mother Nature gifts the planet with the aurora borealis, a glimmering spectacle we know as the Northern Lights. During this period, charged particles from the sun collide with the earth’s atmosphere to produce glowing streaks of color that dance across the night skies of northern Europe and North America. It’s as beautiful a sight as you will ever see, which explains why so many people make pilgrimages to Alaska, Canada, and all the Nordic countries of Europe to get a good look at it.

All this is usually over by April, but thanks to a recent rash of geomagnetic storms, lucky ducks living in the northernmost American states have had a rare chance in the last week or so to see what truly is the greatest show on earth. If you missed it this time around, think about making a trek to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada next year. Churchill is not only one of the primo spots in Canada to see the lights, it’s also known as the Polar Bear Capital of World. If you time your trip right, you can watch the polar bears making their annual march to the sea by day and by night you can bask in the glow of the Northern Lights over the Canadian tundra. Bucket list anyone?

#Positivity® Stories

The Soldier in a Penguin Suit

One member of the Norwegian King’s Guard is not like the others. He’s small but he’s got an impressive title: Major General Sir Nils Olav III, Baron of the Bouvet Islands and Official Mascot of the King’s Guard of Norway. The story of this high-ranking king penguin began in 1961 when Norwegian Commander Nils Egelien visited the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland. Egelien was impressed by the penguins’ orderly march around their enclosure and decided to adopt one as the mascot for the Norwegian King’s Guard, naming the new recruit Nils Olav. The current Nils Olav is 22 years old and the third penguin to hold the illustrious position. There’s something about a penguin in uniform…

Cutting a Rug

Customers at a local coffee shop in Middleboro, Massachusetts can show off their dance moves for a free cup of joe. Josh Rashid, owner of Coffee Milano Café, saw a video about a pizza place that offered customers a free slice for a dance and thought, “Why not here?” He posted a sign in the window on a Friday and on Sunday morning, 20 or so people were flossing, waltzing, and moonwalking across the café floor. Clips of his customers dancing have been viewed over seven million times on social media. “Just keep dancing,” Rashid says. “Enjoy life. It’s short. It’s fun. We have good days, we have bad days, but sometimes a coffee and a dance make it all better.”

Mini Medic

Anyone can save a life. Just ask 10-year-old Jack Dawson, who teaches CPR to adults and children in his home town of Staffordshire, England. He started learning the basics way back when he was a toddler from his grandfather, who owned an emergency response company. Most kids would just be fascinated by the sirens and flashing lights of an ambulance, but Jack was interested in the actual procedures the medics used to help people. When he started practicing CPR on his teddy bears, Jack’s parents decided to get him proper first aid training. “He was like a sponge,” said his mother, Danielle. “He just picked everything up so quickly.” Now under the supervision of his father and other medics, Jack holds workshops to teach CPR and how to use a defibrillator. None of Jack’s adult students seem to mind his age; most are comforted knowing that if a kid can do it, they can, too!
