This week we're presenting Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, Boston Sculptors Gallery, and ShowUp Gallery.
Art can be a way to escape the real world or it can be a way to analyze, interpret and make sense of the problems, obstacles and issues that exist around us. This week's exhibitions use artwork to examine affordable housing, migration and survival, as well as the relationship - and tension - between tradition and modernity.

HOME at Lexington Arts and Crafts Society

Image courtesy 13Forest Gallery. | | Lexington Arts and Crafts Society presents its second biennial HOME exhibition in conjunction with LexHAB, an affordable housing organization. The works in HOME focus on the role that housing plays in people's lives and share the perspective that "a shelter is a need, a house can be a haven, a nest can be empty, a home can be inhabitable: climate change, income inequality, racism, violence, love, community, and family are just a few of the factors that impact our concept of home and our ability to attain and maintain a home." This show is meant to raise awareness and funds for LexHAB's mission to provide affordable housing to low- and medium-income households. The Weight: How to Move at Boston Sculptors Gallery

Image courtesy of artist. | | Boston Sculptors Gallery presents The Weight: How to Move, a show featuring the sculptural work of Laura Evans that depicts " a rag-tag, yet determined, group of travelers on the move" made from "found objects, sewn and stuffed textiles, clay, wire and more." Evans characterizes these "desperate creatures" as being "forced out of their homelands either by the effects of war, economic loss, political persecution, life-threatening disease, discrimination or the degradation of their environments." While these beings are shown as desperate and clinging to survival, their construction, forward momentum and charm lend a glimmer of hope to otherwise overwhelming circumstances. Between Two Worlds: Making Sense of Modern Life from Indigenous Perspectives at ShowUp Gallery

Featuring work by indigenous artists Hailey-Jade Araujo, Carlin Bear Don’t Walk, Allison Begay, Scott Strong Hawk Foster, Sierra Henries and Danielle SeeWalker, Between Two Worlds combines traditional and modern resources and techniques to present a cross-section of indigenous art in the United States. Some artists, like Carlin Bear Don't Walk use their work to "represent for my community and be their voice, to tell their story in a way nobody has done it before," while others like Danielle SeeWalker explore "intersections of Native American stereotypes, microaggressions, and colonialist systems, both historically and in contemporary society."
