Monday, September 30th

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

As an organization, we are committed to ongoing learning and taking meaningful action based on what we learn. In recognition of this commitment, we invite all staff and volunteers to wear an orange shirt (purchased from an authorized vendor – see the link below) on September 30th. Please join us in the great room at 3:00 PM to watch the live broadcast from Parliament Hill, as we honor Residential School Survivors and pay tribute to the children who never returned home.

September 30th is recognized as Orange Shirt Day, an indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day inspired by the story of an Indian Residential school Survivor, Phyllis Webstad. Phyllis was 6 years old when she wore her new orange shirt for her first day at residential school. Her shirt was immediately taken from her by school staff. To honour the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remember those who did not, many Canadians across the country wear an orange shirt. A chat with Kayla

What have been your most memorable experiences since you joined us?

1. Starting work here during Employee Appreciation Week wasn’t too shabby!

2. Joining a wonderful team of compassionate, empathetic and kind individuals who work together to make sure that everyone is getting the best care possible.

3. PRIDE DAY at our Day Wellness Program. It was such an inclusive day filled with happiness, joy, love and acceptance!

What has been the most surprising aspect of working here so far?

How open everyone is about their own grief stories and experiences with death, dying and bereavement. It is usually a very taboo subject out in society, and I feel that it is completely accepted and understood here. It’s very refreshing.
