Lambs Born at Old World Wisconsin!

According to Animal Programs Coordinator, Kylie...

The lambs have FINALLY arrived!

2 boys and 2 girls this year. The OWW Animal Care Team will be rotating who is at Animal Encounters, weather permitting, and the sheep will EVENTUALLY spend the summer in the pasture right next to Animal Encounters

This year, Blanche was the first ewe to give birth…..having twins!! (one boy and one girl, born on June 4th). Both of those babies are doing well. The boy might be the sweetest boy every; he is the first to run over to anybody entering their pen to greet them. He already has little horn buds growing. He was born around 10 lbs and is already up to 25 lbs! The girl is a little more reserved; she will not join her brother until she is 100% certain everything is safe. But when she does show up, she is the first to chew on anything you have. She is already full of attitude...she is going to be just like her momma. She was born at 10 lbs and is now already over 25 lbs.

Sylvia gave birth next, and she was a champion. She started showing signs of labor around 8am and by 9am, her baby was on the ground, starting to try to stand. She gave birth to a ram lamb who was even bigger at 12 lbs, born June 11th. We were incredibly excited to see that he was all black, just like his mom. It took him about 4 days to get the hang of nursing without our help, but now he is outgrowing all the other lambs at over 27 lbs already. He is our only Cotswold lamb this year, and he really stands out with his incredibly curly hair (and massive body size)!

Lastly, Floss gave birth on June 17 to a 13 lb girl!!!! She was so big, she was actually stuck in the birth canal. After a lot of help from Animal Care staff, we were able to pull her out and get her breathing. This birth may have been the most stressful for everyone involved, but we ended up with the most interesting looking little lamb. This little girl has black spots on her knees, belly, face, and a beautiful black outline on her ears. It is something we have not seen here before and definitely makes her unique. Floss took great care of her up until she was about 4 days old. Unfortunately, she decided she was not interested in letting her nurse anymore, so the lamb has officially become a bottle baby. She is falling in love with all of the Animal Care staff and is very vocal when it comes time to eat.

Learn about the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin

On August 2nd, Old World Wisconsin will be hosting Eliza Skenandore, an Oneida artist and cultural advocate. Eliza will be using her raised beadwork and basketry to share her knowledge of Oneida and Haudenosaunee culture and history. Eliza's presentation will offer Old World Wisconsin guests a hands-on opportunity to engage with Indigenous perspectives and the story of the Oneida Nation in Wisconsin.

Presentations will be held at Harmony Town Hall at 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm.

Please join us for this exciting opportunity!

YOU can enhance STEM-based, hands-on programs at OWW by donating to our Chair's Challenge

Each year since 2019, the Chair of the Old World Foundation Board of Trustees has chosen a project or program to highlight based on the needs of Old World Wisconsin. Our Chair then challenges our supporters to raise money to fund that project or program. Our Sunset Soiree is a night of celebration to thank those who donate $250 or more to the chosen project or program.

This year, our Chair has chosen to raise money for hands-on programming at Old World Wisconsin.

Please help us reach our goal to raise $40,000 by August 8. Thanks to several anonymous donors, all donations up to $18,000 will be matched 100%!

Additional details can be found on our website: oldworldfoundation.org

The poster captures a moment of wonder: children immersed in exploration beneath a Wisconsin sunset, echoing the educational experiences found at Old World Wisconsin. This also design celebrates the magic that happens when learning is playful, interactive, and rooted in curiosity.

Independence Days...a look back at Family Fun!

Guests learned about becoming a U.S. Citizen in the 1800s. It was a much easier process than it is today. Signing an oath of allegiance was necessary. Above, a young guest makes his oath.

We had fun greeting guests and handing out cow bells on July 4 & 5. If you have never celebrated Independence Day at Old World Wisconsin, you don't know what you are missing!

Sponsored by Old World Foundation thanks to our donors!

Ellen, a facilitator at the United Brethren Church in the Pleasant Ridge area was working on a Red Cross Quilt.

This Red Cross quilt was started about 15-20 years ago by OWW staff. It commemorates the Red Cross quilts that were made during the WWI period, to raise money for the Red Cross organization. A person would pay money to have a block in the quilt. She/he would sign the quilt block along one side of the block, and then write the names of their soldiers along the other three sides of the block. Those signatures and names would be embroidered over with red thread in a redwork stitch, and then a red cross was appliqued in the center of the block. All of the blocks were then sewn into a quilt. OWW facilitators are in the process of quilting this quilt to finish it.

We are grateful for our Board of Trustees,

Advisory Committee, and Ambassadors

Did you know that Old World Foundation is guided by a volunteer Board of Trustees?

Trustees can serve up to three, 3-year terms. The trustees formally 6 times each year. You can find information about our current trustees on our website: https://oldworldfoundation.org/staff-trustees.html

In addition, Old World Foundation hosts a meeting twice a year with a group of community partners who comprise our Advisory Committee to discuss various issues related to Old World Foundation.

Finally, we have recently formed an ambassadors group which is composed of people who want to help us spread the word about how Old World Foundation supports Old World Wisconsin.

If you are interested in joining us to help enhance our network of supporters, we would like to talk with you. There are other ways to help us grow if meetings are not appealing to you.

Please send an email to Gwen Griffin at ggriffin@friendsoww.org to discuss options.

Construction Continues at OWW...

Crews are busy working on the new Welcome Center at Old World Wisconsin. Work will continue into next year as this new building takes shape. Stay tuned for more information and pictures as the building progresses.

Classifieds

As you know, your support is crucial to enhance programs and complete projects at Old World Wisconsin. Donations of any size can be combined to make a large impact at OWW.

We have created a classified section here that will list lower cost items needed by various program areas at OWW. You will be able to donate to purchase specific items if you wish and smaller donation can be combined to enhance your impact.

Today, you can make an impact by donating to purchase wooden shoes to replace worn out or cracked wooden shoes at the 1880’s Pomeranian Immigrant Farm at Old World Wisconsin. These shoes are a key activity to the experience on the back porch of the house. Guests use the shoes to help with chores across the farm to experience what some European Farmers used as work shoes. In acquiring new shoes, they are looking to expand the range of sizes available for guests specifically in the children’s wooden shoe sizes. OWW needs 7-10 pairs of shoes and each pair costs between $30-$50 depending on the size.

Below are the pictured items needed. If the item has already been funded, the donation will be used for another needed item in the same program.

Thank you for your consideration!

Old World Wisconsin also needs items for the Danish Naturalist Cabin. Below are the pictured items needed. If the item has already been funded, the donation will be used for another needed item in the same program.

THANK YOU to the Old World Foundation Annual Sponsors:
