LATEST UPDATE: What to Expect With Construction

Photo: Drivers can see the new bridge abutment and MSE retaining wall construction near Blue Valley Parkway. MSE stands for mechanically stabilized earth. These walls are supported with rock fill and use large metal straps to help hold the wall panels in place.

Major traffic shifts are in development to open more work areas to construction between 119th Street and 103rd Street. The concrete plant near Blue Valley Parkway and the southbound U.S. 69 lanes is starting up. Expect to see trucks moving in and out of this area. Please continue to watch for crews and other drivers in the work zone during construction this summer. Follow signs and drive carefully as the lane configurations will change.

The ramp from southbound U.S. 69 to 151st Street is closed for approximately 30 days. Drivers should follow the marked detour routes to 159th Street.

Information on trails and upcoming planned closures are detailed in the articles below. Please continue to check 69Express.org for the latest information as construction schedules are fluid and can change with the weather.

Westbound I-435 loop ramp to U.S. 69 Southbound Closures – Starting July 15th

During scheduled ramp closures, drivers will detour by exiting westbound I-435 using the northbound U.S. 69 ramp. Then, traveling north on U.S. 69 to exit at 103rd Street, and turning west on 103rd Street, to then use the southbound U.S. 69/103rd Street entrance ramp.

Please note that construction schedules are subject to change. Watch for updated information on this closure on message boards, text alerts or information from the 69Express project.

Fun Facts!

To give you an idea of the scale of the 69Express project, we will occasionally drop a fun fact about the work.

Did you know the contractor will use 26,000 cubic yards of bridge concrete during the course of this project. That's the equivalent of seven

Olympic-sized pools!

Tomahawk Creek and Indian Creek Trail Updates

Overland Park residents and trail enthusiasts have noticed the closures of both the Tomahawk Creek and Indian Creek Trails at the crossings with U.S. 69. As construction continues in certain areas around these trails near U.S. 69, the project work makes traveling these trails unsafe. The Indian Creek Trail is scheduled to reopen in October of 2024, and the Tomahawk Creek Trail is expected to reopen in the summer of 2024. Please visit the Overland Park Trail Website for updates, trail detours, and additional closure information.
