The AACo Bulletin will publish every two weeks throughout the summer. Staff will continue to keep members updated on necessary items via email. We will resume our weekly publication in the fall.
Legislative & Budget Update
This week was quiet, as the legislature adjourned sine die last week. The Governor’s Office is providing counties, cities, towns and nonprofits with nearly $600 million in coronavirus relief and recovery dollars for local Arizona governments and nonprofits. $441 million is provided to local governments that did not receive any funding in the first round of relief in the form of direct, flexible funding. Additionally, local governments, tribal communities, schools and others will be eligible for expedited reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) for coronavirus-related expenses, including purchases of testing supplies, PPE and other covid-19 related items.

The ASU Certified Public Manager ® Program is designed to develop the effectiveness of municipal, county, state, tribal, and federal public managers. Over 100 public managers earn the CPM designation through ASU each year. The program is available in both a classroom and an online format. The online CPM Program attracts a mix of participants from Arizona and other states.
 
Please note, in recent years, demand for the spring classroom cohort has been decreasing. As a result, we now will offer the classroom version of the program only once per year in the fall. To ensure your seat in the yearly classroom cohort for 2020, we suggest you apply early. Our online CPM Program will continue to be offered twice per year.

2020 NACo-Nationwide Aspire Award
Are you aware that 400,000 county employees from more than 3,100 county agencies are saving for retirement with the NACo Deferred Compensation program? That’s 400,000 citizens who were given the opportunity to take an active role in planning for their future – 400,000 community members who, in the face of numerous and competing financial demands, took that opportunity, and decided to utilize a trusted program to save. In a day and age when individuals and organizations alike are pushed to do more with less, NACo is eager to recognize the monumental contribution from NACo’s county plan sponsors in marketing this cornerstone program successfully and helping that number of participants reach new heights.

Many counties, as employers and plan sponsors of the NACo Deferred Compensation Program, have developed and implemented innovative approaches to help create opportunities for their employees to be retirement ready. NACo, and its Program administrator, Nationwide Retirement Solutions, have created the Aspire Award to recognize two plan sponsors that have gone above and beyond in empowering their employees for retirement success.

Two awards will be presented and consideration will be given to the plan sponsors who present measurable outcomes that result from unique, unusual, original efforts to successfully engage county employees in their retirement futures. The impact of the efforts will be evaluated. For more information about applying checkout the  Aspire Award webpage , the submission deadline is Friday June 12th.
