Legislative Update
The flood of bills is finally over. Monday marked the last day for new bill introduction, with the exception of striker amendments. 1,707 bill, memorials and resolutions have been introduced. The last day for bills to be heard in their chamber of origin is next Friday, February 21 st , unless the chambers vote to extend the deadline. So if a bill has not been heard in committee by the end of next week, it is dead unless revived through a striker. We expect very long committee hearings next week. Several AACo bill made progress this week. SB1393 , Adult Jail Education Fund, passed the Senate Education committee unanimously and the bill is on the agenda for the Senate Appropriations committee on Tuesday, February 18 th at 2:00pm. Another AACo bill, HB2414 , Diversion Funding , made it through the House Appropriations committee unanimously, with many legislators commenting that this is the kind of criminal justice reform that they want to see more of. HB2581 , Dangerous/Incompetent/Non-Restorable , was held last week due to time constraints but it is on the agenda for next Wednesday, February 19 th at 8:30am in HHR4.

2020 NACo Achievement Awards Now Open
Celebrate 50 Years of County Innovation

Applications are now open for the National Association of Counties (NACo)  2020 Achievement Awards ! Join NACo in celebrating 50 years of county innovation by applying today. 

Since 1970, the NACo Achievement Awards have recognized outstanding county government programs and services. Through a non-competitive application process, noteworthy programs receive awards in 18 categories that cover a vast range of county responsibilities. By participating, your county can earn national recognition.

The 18 "best of category" winners will be recognized on stage at the 2020 NACo Annual Conference in Orange County/Orlando, Fla., and all winners will be recognized in the program book and online. NACo also provides a customizable press release for you to share the good news with the media and county residents.

NACo encourages all counties, parishes and boroughs to apply.
