COABE Welcomes 2022
State Advocates for Adult Education Fellows
|
|
The Coalition on Adult Basic Education’s State Advocacy Fellowship focuses on the development of leadership, advocacy skills, research capacity, and network of influence for adult educators, educational staff, and/or administrators. The purpose of this fellowship is to help build a robust network of leaders and advocates focused on the advancement of adult literacy across the country.
During the part-time, year-long fellowship, fellows will engage in national and regional policy discussions and join a growing number of peers dedicated to building advocacy. The COABE State Advocacy Fellowship comprises a series of federal- and state-related training sessions focused on building advocacy and leadership skills.
Congratulations to the 2022 Fellow Marsha Taylor - Director of the Arkansas Adult Learning Resource Center - who has been selected for the State Advocate for Adult Education Fellowship as representative for Arkansas.
“This program has proven success increasing funding and visibility at the state level”, said Sharon Bonney, Chief Executive Officer for the Coalition on Adult Basic Education. Bonney cited the recent Collective Impact Report that was published by COABE noting the accomplishments of the first cohort of the Fellowship.
“I am thrilled for the 2022 SAAEF Fellows as they spend the next year learning how to become better advocates for adult education across the country and better leaders, with the ultimate goal of providing the best adult education systems for our students. We are mindful that legislators do not make policy, the stories of our students and our teachers do,” says Jeffrey Abramowitz, Chair of the SAAEF Fellowship Program.

DISABILITIES
National Center for College Students with Disabilities (NCSSD)
Post Pandemic Resources
|
|
In 2020, the world was thrown into a whirlwind of uncertainty with the pandemic. The educational system was no exception. Through the federal government, there has been extensive, heightened research on the impacts of the pandemic on the disability community. Although all communities suffered during the pandemic, the disability community took a greater hit in all aspects from home caregiving needs to education. One resource is the National Center for College Students with Disabilities Clearinghouse. The NCCSD was developed through a 4-year grant with the Office of Postsecondary Education and administered through the Office for Postsecondary Education. The resources provided through the clearinghouse are beneficial to adult educators as well. They provide practical information from mental health needs to accessibility resources.

The Office of Civil Rights (OCR)
Accessibility Webinar
The foundation of the Office of Civil Rights provides assistance and equitable access. This also includes tools and resources that promote equal access for education. The OCR provided a short webinar on website accessibility and online education. With many of our adult education sites utilizing online platforms, it is important to keep accessibility on the forefront of our minds for our students with disabilities. It is first important to ensure that the needs of the students are well known. This way, educators can ensure that information is being prepared with accessibility needs in mind. This short seven-minute webinar by the OCR helps to give insight on online accessibility and education.

Access Aztec Abstruse Apps
|
Aztec has some great learning programs that we have learned to access by going to the Admin Center, then Enrollments, and finding the classes that start with our center's name. For instance, if you are with Fort Smith Adult Education, then in the Add/Drop Enrollments search box, start typing the word "Fort" and you should see all the classes that have been assigned to the Fort Smith location and those are the classes that you want to assign to your students. There are 16 available classes that should be assigned to each teacher’s account at each center. If you don’t have all 16 assigned to your account, then let Rob Pollan rob@aarlc.org know and he will help you out.
But what about those other classes in Aztec that you might have heard about? Where are Flash and TABE Tutor? Well, they are there, but they will not start with your center's name so you may not find them right away. To find those hidden classes, go to Admin Center / Enrollments and type in the name of the class in the Add/Drop Enrollments search box and you should find it. As of March 2022, the classes that are listed this way are Flash, Life Skills, WAGE, and TABE Tutor. And if you’ve been keeping up with the math, that gives us a grand total of 20 available classes.
Aztec Tip – be sure to assign your teacher tag and your center's tag to your students when creating their accounts, because it is helpful when running reports as it makes them easy to find. In reports, simply select your teacher tag and any other tag you have assigned to your students and they will be listed so you don’t have to search for each individual student to run your reports.
