Laws have evolved along with awareness of human rights, including the rights of minors, with increased protections for children and youth from harmful situations. Often children may not be able to put their experiences into words, or may not know they deserve safety and the fulfillment of basic human needs. Children may rely on adults outside the family to stand up for them. This is where educators and school personnel serve a vital role in our society: to watch over and shield our children and youth.
 
In this course, Sherry Williamson, Child Abuse Project Coordinator at the Arkansas Commission on Child Abuse, Rape and Domestic Violence, shares personal stories and professional insights that compel Arkansas educators and school staff to move beyond the discomfort that comes with facing hard realities. This fully narrated and interactive training features scenarios drawn from real-life experiences. We glean first-hand insights from Arkansas leaders who work to combat crimes against children. Armed with awareness, knowledge, and a sense of higher purpose, Arkansas educators and school personnel can be resolved in their convictions to “be the reason” children, youth, and families survive and thrive.

This course meets the requirements of Act 1236 of 2011
for the 2021-22 school year.

DISABILITIES

Proposed Employment Changes for Persons with Disabilities

Under Federal law (34 CFR § 361.48), states are required to work with entities receiving federal funds to ensure that persons with disabilities receive adequate transitional services for competitive employment. However, the meaning of several aspects of the law has been left to states to determine. Recently, the United States Federal government proposed changes to the disability employment rules to increase clarity.
A few proposed changes include:

  • Ensuring persons with disabilities earn at least minimum wage
  • Work in an inclusive setting with the opportunity to interact with persons without a disability
  • Provide advancement opportunities equal to non-disabled co-workers

As with any guidance and rules, there will be special considerations. These would be for positions where safety, or lack thereof, could be life or death. These would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

GED Flash

Did you know that the popular GED Flash is now available for you in Aztec? If you didn’t, it may because it’s a little different to find than your other Aztec classes.

First, what is GED Flash? 

The GED Flash program allows students to quickly review concepts in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Students receive 10 questions on each attempt, and receive immediate feedback on their responses. This is a great study aid when preparing for the GED Tests, and a quick refresher of concepts often needed prior to taking the assessment.
 
Finding GED Flash in Aztec

While in Aztec https://plus.aztecsoftware.com/, go to Admin Center – Click the Classes button – under Class Session click in the Filter box – and instead of searching for your GED Flash class by your center’s name first, simply search for Flash.


TABE / DRC Tips

  • Transferring students – if a student has already taken a TABE test at another center, do not try to make a duplicate account because this causes unnecessary issues. Simply fill out the TABE transfer form at the bottom of this page http://aalrc.org/adminteachers/technology/bestlearningsites.html and either use your phone to take a picture and then text it to Rob Pollan at 479-806-2617, or scan it and email it to [email protected] and he will make the transfer ASAP.

  • Invalidating a Students Score – if a student takes a test that needs to be invalidated, send the students name, DOB, test date and start time - to Rob Pollan [email protected] and he will invalidate it. He needs the information from DRC (not LACES). To find the information in DRC, go to Student Management – Manage Students – search for the student – click the Action button – then the Test Sessions tab. The invalidation should be reflected in LACES the following morning.

  • TABE has announced that its Offline test will be available in the near future. More information coming soon.
Adult Learning Alliance (ALA) Update

The ALA Annual Tutor Conference was held virtually this year May 20-21, with approximately 90 literacy council directors and tutors, along with adult education program teachers, participating in sessions on conflict resolution, fundraising, recruitment and retention of volunteer tutors, diversifying adult education boards, workforce preparation, intonation in the age of Zoom, adapting materials for remote instruction, LACES, online tools for distance learning, and learning disabilities. On Friday, May 21, Adult Learning Alliance celebrated their 50th Anniversary with a virtual celebration. The event began with a congratulatory video by President Bill Clinton, followed by a compilation of conversations with founding member Betty Harp, longtime board member Barbara Hanley, and former executive director Marie Clinton Bruno. Annual awards were announced and celebrated. Congratulations to the following: AmeriCorps Member of the Year – Oneida Ibarra, Literacy Council of Western Arkansas; Tutor of the Year – Aubrey Dollar, Twin Lakes Literacy Council; Student of the Year – Denise Anderson, Literacy Council of Bowie & Miller Counties; Innovative Project Award - Arkansas Department of Human Services - Division of Children and Families; Literacy Council Excellence in Education - River Valley Adult Learning Alliance; and the Win Rockefeller Leadership Award - Billie Seef, nominated by the Twin Lakes Literacy Council. The 3rd Annual Barbara Hanley Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to former ALA Board Member and Interim Executive Director, Dr. Peggy Sissel. Among the many partnerships recognized was ALA’s partnership with Adult Education since 1997. Executive Director Nancy Leonhardt’s closing remarks elaborated on the 3 R’s for the new year: Recovery, Reopening, and Return. To view the event, please click the button below.
