THE DESIGNER
Established in 2014, Daniel Joseph Chenin, Ltd. is an award-winning, multi-disciplinary design studio redefining luxury with an integrated approach that blurs the lines between design disciplines and project typologies. Drawing upon experience crafting luxury hospitality spaces for top tier international brands, the firm is focused on delivering exceptional service and design quality across a range of project types.
Pushing beyond the boundaries of the conventional process that separates architecture from interior design and exterior environments, our approach has been honed across more than two decades in practice to deliver a unique singularity of vision. This rigorous and holistic approach has established the firm’s reputation for exceptionally crafted, meticulously detailed and thoughtfully curated spaces.
Taking on a limited number of commissions at a time, each project begins as a study into their clients’ objectives, without a preconceived notion or prototypical style. Equally pragmatic and artist, Daniel's approach centers on developing a meaningful understanding of each commission – balancing their client’s functional and aesthetic priorities to craft spaces that are fully conceptualized, richly layered and entirely representative of their clients’ vision. Each design is timeless, yet unexpected.
THE PROJECT
Located along the western most point of Las Vegas, the site benefits from unobstructed views of Red Rock Canyon. The clients, a family of nature enthusiasts, sought architectural and interior design for an environmentally conscious home, with a direct relationship to its site, to function as a base camp for their active lifestyle.
In response, the house is an open structure, organized into three layers, which radiate from a communal nucleus to a periphery of more intimate and private zones. The layout is designed to be both compact and spread out over multiple single-story volumes, making the program readable as a series of connected rock masses emerging from the earth. Each volume is carefully placed to maximize views of the surrounding untouched land, while mitigating the harsh effects of the desert sun and wind. The building pays homage to the old fort structures from the early settlement days of Las Vegas.
Inspired by the surrounding desert, the design seeks to tame the rugged landscape with materiality and detailing that becomes progressively more refined as it moves from the fringes of the site inward. The residence is comprised of carefully chosen native and regionally sourced materials that will compliment and evolve with the site as they age and patina over time. The raw exterior stone and steel cladding penetrate the interior spaces and are met with a restrained and curated palette of travertine, wood, and uncoated bronze.
The furnishings include a mixture of styles and price points, both bespoke and found, which come together to create a comfortable, collected aesthetic that is timeless and livable. Tactile surfaces and hand-crafted detailing evoke the feeling of days past. As a result, the home is robust and anchored in the landscape, but stands alone; a fort along the fringe immersed in its tranquil landscape.
