TRANSFORMING AGING IN PLACE TO AGING WITH GRACE IN THE KITCHEN AND BATH

Are you excited to grow old in the house you have always known? For most older Americans, the answer is a resounding “yes.” ― However, multiple steps must be taken to achieve this goal. By analyzing the relationship between growing older and the adaptation of universal design, this CEU explains the path designers should consider, ensuring the safety and happiness of their customers as they age in place.

Learning Objectives

• Discuss the value and necessity of creating a living space that allows homeowners to comfortably and gracefully age in place

• Define the key principles for Universal Design in kitchens and baths

• Explain situations where products need to be ADA-compliant versus simply meeting ADA standards

• Define kitchen and bath products that meet the practical and aesthetic needs of homeowners for gracefully aging-in-place

Students used this as a learning opportunity and it allowed them hands-on experience with textiles & finishes. It featured reps from Dunn Edwards, Schumacher, and more. It helped them source materials for their school projects, such as Emeli Hernandez’s colorful board featuring fabrics from MR Design Lab. Her board, along with others the students make, are featured on the chapter’s Instagram page every week for Material Board Monday!
