DSPs are the Heart of Our Mission
Amanda Adney, a 9-year employee of Abilities First, was recognized in September as a grand-prize winner for her exceptional service as a direct support professional. She is a DayHab specialist, and when asked about her role at Abilities First, she had these insightful words to share:
“In today's world, these folks are a breath of fresh air. They don’t carry baggage or care about unimportant things,” Amanda said. “They are so pure. No money can buy time or patience, but that is all they ask. I think I get more from them than they do from me.”
Amanda Adney is an excellent role model for DSPs everywhere. She believes she gets more than she gives when it comes to her career, and she has all the values and traits that are ideal for a DSP: patience, kindness, understanding, and a good, positive attitude. She looks forward to continuing her work as a DSP—as do the folks she supports and AF leadership—and we all look forward to her continued contributions.

What's Happening at Abilities First?
Thanks to staff, families, and community partners, the students at the AF schools and preschools enjoyed some Halloween treats at our Trunk-or-Treat!
While the AF students enjoyed their Halloween, the participants in our adult programs also had their fair share of fun with costumes, games, and treats!
Arlene Dembo reached out to Abilities First asking how her daughter, Krystal’s, 16th birthday could benefit our mission. Thanks to her outreach, we were able to provide information for her to share with birthday party guests. Thanks to their efforts, gifts were received that will enhance the lives of those supported. We’d like to extend our appreciation to Krystal and her family for choosing to support AF.

Have you included Abilities First in your year-end charitable giving?
The end of a year often marks a time for families to support local charities through gifts of cash, appreciated stock, or RMD’s (required minimum distributions from funds). Throughout the year, the staff and Board of the Foundation for Abilities First NY (FAFNY) engage the community for philanthropic support to help with the underfunded activities of Abilities First schools and adult programs.
Items such as field trips, modern technology, garden supplies, a special meal, and MORE are all made possible through this community support. Please take a moment to make your gift today, or on GivingTuesday. All gifts move this mission forward for our neighbors with disabilities.
You can give online, over the phone, or by mail. To give by phone, contact Teresa Walsh by calling 845-485-9803.

Our sincere appreciation to the following community partners for joining the Foundation for Abilities First NY in its efforts to make Thanksgiving dinner and upcoming holiday gifts possible for many families.
Acme Markets Foundation contributed 20 complete Thanksgiving turkey meals for the residential programs at Abilities First.
A special thank you to those who supported the Back-To-School peer-to-peer fundraising initiative in October. Peers raised $500 for participating AF schools.
Community partners like Walden Savings Bank are at the heart of making all things fun at Abilities First schools! This year was no exception as WSB stepped up once again to sponsor the Blue Pumpkin initiative, which brings awareness for those with autism. Blue bags were provided to all children to use as their trick-or-treat bag, helping to strengthen awareness in the community. Our appreciation to Derryk Wynkoop for personally ensuring the day was fun for all by visiting the Abilities First Preschool in New Windsor.
