New Research: Targeting Sex-Based Differences in Alzheimer’s Disease That Will One Day Improve Clinical Care for Women with AD
In a first for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research, investigators from Cleveland Clinic are attempting to identify sex-based differences in the blood-based proteome, a set of proteins produced in an organism, of patients with AD. Through analysis of thousands of plasma proteins in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biospecimens, they hope to identify candidate biomarkers that can one day be used to improve clinical care for women with AD.
“The evidence from this project will provide critical missing information about the female plasma proteome signature in AD, which is needed for accurate biomarkers and effective therapeutic strategies for women,” says Lynn Bekris, PhD, principal investigator of the pilot study and a researcher in Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute. “Our ultimate goal is to enhance precision medicine targeting sex-specific AD pathological processes.”

U.S. FDA Approves Lecanemab | |
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Leqembi (lecanemab), the second of a new category of medications approved for Alzheimer’s disease. Lecanemab is the first beta amyloid-targeting medication to pass the FDA’s full review. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced plans to enable Medicare access to FDA traditionally approved Alzheimer’s treatments. Medicare coverage is expected to expand access to this new class of treatments to adults over 65 who have been unable to afford the $26,500-a-year medication. The manufacturer of Leqembi demonstrated that patients who received a biweekly infusion of the drug declined 27% more slowly than a comparison group who received placebo treatment. | | | |

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic are optimistic about new treatments and clinical trials for patients. An Ohio couple is having success with monthly infusions in an Alzheimer's clinical trial.
College sweethearts Jenny and Joe Knapp have been married for nearly 50 years. Jenny, diagnosed with AD has been part of several clinical trials at the Cleveland Clinic, and is currently receiving monthly infusions to help slow the progression of the disease, as there is no cure.
“If you can buy yourself another five years, that’s considered to be successful,” said her husband Joe.

Researchers from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, University Hospitals and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center have joined together to form the Cleveland Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (CADRC). The CADRC is one of 33 centers funded by the National Institutes on Aging. The center aims to study the different forms of dementia in the hope that learning more about the disease can lead to new forms of treating and eventually curing Alzheimer's and related disorders. Volunteers are critical to the research process and the center studies both people with Alzheimer’s disease and healthy individuals who are at risk for developing dementia. This study is most interested in including volunteers who have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment, Lewy Body Dementia, or Atypical dementia.

Euclid Senior Center Memory Screening Event
Aug 16, 2023 The CADRC provided memory screening to Euclid Senior Center members, an event that is becoming very popular and asked for regularly. There was a resource table for research studies and services, and games played to occupy participants while waiting to be screened.

July thru Sept 2023 The Cleveland department of Aging sponsors Walk on Wednesday this summer. There are 10 scheduled walks throughout the city. This outreach event gives us an opportunity to talk with healthy seniors who might be interested in being in the research study as a healthy participant. More info here.

Euclid Senior Center Memory Screening Event
July 19, 2023 This event provided attendees the opportunity to participate in memory screenings and learn about ways to help their brain as they age. Lots was fun was had by many as they played games and took turns with Karaoke.

The CADRC Team will be participating at events in the Northeast Ohio area in 2023. The Walks are a family friendly event! After each Walk, participates are welcome to stay to visit local vendors and participate in the event’s activities.
