Martha Sajatovic, MD, leads the CADRC outreach, recruitment and engagement core (OREC) efforts. Of particular concern are underrepresented racial and ethnic minority groups who suffer disproportionate burden with higher rates of AD/ADRD compared to the general population. AD/ADRD is often underreported among minority populations due to low awareness of symptoms (perception that it may be part of “normal aging”), stigma regarding diagnosis and help-seeking, and limited access to care. At the same time, there is limited research representation of these groups in AD/ADRC research. Increasing the diversity of the clinical research study participants in studies at the CADRC s critical, and in order to do this Dr. Sajatovic and the OREC team are conducting the Targeting stigma, mistrust, personal concerns, altruism and cultural congruence to boost awareness and participation in dementia research (The POWER project).
Project Overview, Roll-out and Deliverables:
The POWER project will use an evidence-based conceptual model of behavior change and target specific potentially modifiable barriers and facilitators for ethnic and racial minority dementia research participation. To help ensure success and saliency to the target population, the project will develop a communication approach to promote research participation that taps into the support and organization of local stakeholders, including representation from minority elders, as well as input from health communication experts.
This 3-phase, 18 month project will:
- Build upon an existing, successful minority advisory board (Board) of the CADRC to develop 2 dementia-focused health communication videos
- Test the effects of the videos on change in readiness to participate in dementia research (as measured by the trans-theoretical conceptual model)
- Examine effects of the videos on barrier and facilitator engagement targets posited to lead to participation in dementia research
- Use findings to augment community outreach and engagement efforts to increase community awareness of AD to minimize dementia-stigma and optimize community participation in AD research
