Investigator's Spotlight
Ann W. Nguyen, PhD
Tell us about yourself and how you are involved with the Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC)?
I am an Assistant Professor in the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University. I received my doctoral training in social work and psychology from the Program for Research on Black Americans at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research. My research aims to identify psychosocial factors, such as social relationships, social isolation, discrimination, and religious participation, that represent risk and protective factors for health and well-being among Black Americans across the life span. The overarching goal of my research program is to contribute to health equity by identifying modifiable factors that lead to disparities in health.
I became interested in investigating risk and protective factors of cognitive decline among older Black adults because of stark disparity in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) risk between Black and white older adults. I am also interested in this topic because it is a common condition that is co-morbid with many of the mental and physical health conditions that I study.

Are you Interested in Participating in Research at the CADRC?
Researchers from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, University Hospitals and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center have joined together to form the Cleveland Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (CADRC). The CADRC is one of 33 centers funded by the National Institutes on Aging. The center aims to study the different forms of dementia in the hope that learning more about the disease can lead to new forms of treating and eventually curing Alzheimer's and related disorders. Volunteers are critical to the research process and the center studies both people with Alzheimer’s disease and healthy individuals who are at risk for developing dementia. we This study is most interested in including volunteers who have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, mild cognitive impairment, Lewy Body Dementia, or Atypical dementia.

November Alzheimer's Association Caregiver Luncheon:
Nov. 29, 2022 In recognition of Caregiver Awareness Month, the Cleveland Area Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association partnered and collaborated with Benjamin Rose Institute of Aging, The Loving Hands Group, Megan Mitchell Creative, and the CADRC for a day designed for caregivers and their loved ones to enjoy a family portrait session, boxed lunch, dementia-friendly group activities, and an information session about resources available through the Alzheimer's Association.

Forest Hills Terrace Rd. Apartments / Acti-v8 Your
Brain Program:
Nov. 17, 2022 The CADRC collaborated with the Alzheimer's Association and a member from our Minority Advisory Board to present the Acti-v8 Your Brain program. The event was held at Forest Hills Terrace Rd. Apartments. The purpose of the program was to recommend a plan for healthy aging and ways to promote brain health in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, social engagement, and research.

Lunch & Learn Event at the Hispanic Senior Center:
Nov. 12, 2022 Recruiting participants for research studies is difficult, but it’s even more difficult to engage individuals that have been historically under represented in dementia research. This is extremely unfortunate given that African-American and Hispanic individuals bear the brunt of dementia burden and are 1.5-2 x more likely to have dementia. That is why we are reaching out to the Hispanic population and the Hispanic Senior Center is a great place to start. The Spanish version of Healthy Living for the Brain and Body and information on the Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center was presented.

Lakewood Senior Center / Heathy Living for Brain and Body Program:
Nov. 8, 2022 The Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Association to present Heathy Living for Brain and Body: Tips from the latest research. Along with providing insights on Alzheimer’s Disease, information was provided on how to become involved in the CADRC and other research studies at University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and at Case Western Reserve University.

Garfield Heights Public Library / Acti-v8 Your

Oct. 17, 2022 The CADRC collaborated with a CCF Registered Dietitian to present the Acti-v8 Your Brain program. The event was held at the Garfield Heights Public Library. The purpose of the program was to recommend a plan for healthy aging and ways to promote brain health in the areas of diet and nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity, social engagement, and research.

Gunning Park Rose Center for Aging Well:
Oct. 2, 2022 The Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Association to provide an educational presentation at the Lakewood Senior Center. The topic of the presentation was Heathy Living for Brain and Body: Tips from the latest research. Along with providing insights about Alzheimer’s Disease, we also provided information on how to become involved in the CADRC and other research studies at University Hospital, Cleveland Clinic and at Case Western Reserve University.

Walk to End Alzheimer's
Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is the world's largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research.
The CADRC Team will be participating at events around the Cleveland area in 2023. The Walks are a family friendly event! After each Walk, participates are welcome to stay and participate in events and mingle with local venders. All donations support the Alzheimer’s Association’s many programs and services.
