Homeless 36 Years, Ronald Finds Solutions at Human Services Campus
Born in Germany and raised by adoptive parents in Mesa, Arizona,
Ronald
experienced an activity-filled youth, even working in his father’s Architect Office at a very young age. He lived with his parents until they passed away when he was 30 and eventually became homeless. Unsuccessful at attempts to work, he also lost his Naturalization of Citizenship documentation, thereby creating a serious barrier to obtaining housing.
After being homeless for 36 years, he came to the Human Services Campus and began working with Coordinated Entry Navigator staff. In November, 2017, a Navigator filed paperwork with the Immigration Office in Nebraska requesting replacement of his citizenship documentation. In an unrelenting search for records, staff took Ronald to the Motor Vehicle Department, Social Security Office, did outreach to Vital Records and, working with Campus’ Homeless I.D. Project, applied for a Certificate of Abroad, in case Ronald was born on a military base. The Navigators working with Ronald took him to Congressman Gallego’s office for assistance and reached out to the Mesa School District to obtain old school transcripts to support Ronald’s request.
On April 10, 2018, five days before his birthday, Ronald came to the Lodestar Day Resource Center bearing a large manila envelope from Nebraska. It contained Ronald’s Certificate of Naturalization. What a wonderful birthday present! Ronald can now obtain his Arizona State ID, apply for a Social Security Card and Social Security Income. Persistence, cooperation, and teamwork were the keys to achieving these major steps towards moving out of homelessness into housing.

The combined entity will provide:
- Campus Operations (Security, Maintenance, etc.)
- Collaboration mechanisms for the nearly 20 non-profits located on the Campus

ThirstAID Water Drive To Hydrate Campus Clients in Preparation for Summer
St Joseph the Worker and CASS Lead the Way
|
Thirst-Aid is a drive to ensure homeless adults in the Valley have their heat relief needs met to prevent serious health concerns common to those exposed to Arizona summers. Thirst-Aid was launched several years ago by St. Joseph the Worker, whose supporters have made it an immensely successful endeavor. Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) and St. Vincent de Paul also have a great history of obtaining and distributing large volumes of bottled water for clients. This year, the HSC is collaborating with all agencies to make this the most successful Thirst-AID campaign yet! for more information or to donate, please call 602-282-0849.

HSC Clients Receive Foot Washings and Foot Clinic on Holy Thursday
Trinity Cathedral, ASU Collaborate with Campus Partners to Make Event Possible
|
Over 130 individuals were served by 40 volunteers during this compassionate occasion which combined a spiritual, liturgical tradition with medical healthcare. Robert Berra, Episcopal Campus Chaplain for ASU Downtown, spear-headed the effort to bring this wonderful service of foot washings and a foot clinic to the Campus for those experiencing homelessness. St. Vincent de Paul graciously hosted the event. Rev. Berra expressed his gratitude, commenting "This would not have been possible without a significant amount of collaboration" amongst the multiple entities who participated.

In an effort to provide a sustainable, impactful solution to the issue of homelessness in Phoenix, State and County officials will redirect funding that has previously gone toward the temporary overflow shelter to permanent housing solutions. For more than two years, temporary sleeping mats have been available for the homeless population at St. Vincent de Paul on the Human Services Campus. The Emergency Overflow Shelter at St. Vincent de Paul will be serving guests for the last night on September 30, 2018. A transition plan has been created via a collaborative effort of State, County, Community Partners and Campus Providers. For more information, please contact Cole Hickman, Welcome Center Supervisor, at (602) 282-0832 or email us at
