Amy Schwabenlender Appointed Executive Director of Human Services Campus
Brings Extensive Experience Creating Homeless Solutions
|
The Human Services Campus is pleased to announce the appointment of Amy Schwabenlender as Executive Director, effective August 1st. Amy is replacing Dr. Sheila Harris, who completed her successful 18-month interim role for the HSC. "We are exceptionally pleased that Amy has taken on this leadership role," said Mike McQuaid, Chairman of the Board. Amy spent the past 13 years as VP of Community Impact for Valley of the Sun United Way, where she
worked to end hunger and homelessness and to increase the financial stability of individuals and families in Maricopa County. A 2016 Piper Fellow and a graduate of Valley Leadership, she holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Communication from Trinity University in San Antonio, TX and an MBA from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Amy commented on her passion that personifies her new role: "My leadership style focuses on goals and measurable outcomes...and possibly most importantly, I bring a heart and compassion for the populations who access the Campus."

Don, a U.S. Veteran, Shares His Story of How He Ended His
Homelessness By Engaging With Campus Partners
|
|
After completing his military service, Don experienced related health issues that ultimately led to his homelessness. Don tried living at a local shelter to get back on his feet, but discovered it wasn't the right fit for him. Once Don arrived at the Campus and engaged with our staff at the Brian Garcia Welcome Center, he co-authored a strategy to utilize multiple Campus partners to end his homelessness: a bed at the CASS shelter, meals at St. Vincent de Paul and Andre House, behavioral health services at CBI and Navigation for referral to housing. Don worked with HSC Staff to leverage the appropriate onsite Campus resources to remove his barriers to obtain housing. He recently received a housing voucher and will be in his new home soon. Congratulations Don!

Grace Torres, founder of Give With Grace, is a great champion for the Human Services Campus. After seeing Grace serve food and clothing outside the Campus, our staff invited her for a tour to learn more about our services. Like most good-hearted "street-feeders" who volunteer just outside the Campus, she was unaware of the unintended consequences of her giving: health risks for certain clients with medical conditions, large volumes of trash that accumulate on the streets, and enabling individuals to stay on the streets rather than engaging in Campus services to end their homelessness. Grace now graciously provides her services here on the Campus, including a recent shoe drive that collected almost 150 pairs of shoes! When one of our clients needed a pair of size 16 shoes, Grace did not have that size in her collected inventory, and went out and purchased a pair for our client! (see Don's story, above).
Melanie Henry, HSC Supportive Services Coordinator, said it best: "Grace
goes
above and beyond within our community to provide for those in need. From the bottom of our hearts, there should be a million more Grace's in this world. We are so grateful for her passion for service and her kind heart!"

Johnny E. Expresses Gratitude to the HSC
for Being Reunited with His Family in Chicago
|
|
Life circumstances brought Johnny Evans to the Human Services Campus in May. The Brian Garcia Welcome Center Staff was able to prevent the need for Johnny to enter into the homeless services system. Our staff connected Johnny with family, verified that it was a good, stable environment for him to stay, and provided him transportation back to Chicago! Welcome Back Home Johnny!

Reuniting individuals with their family, friends or another support system has an 85% success rate, meaning these individuals do not return to the homeless services system. Funding is needed to increase the number of clients we can reunite each month:

Campus Partners Celebrate Milestone with Thunderbird Charities
Two Million Dollars Over the Years Supports Multiple Services to End Homelessness
|
Thunderbirds Charities has contributed over $2,000,000 to the Human Services Campus and its collaborating partners since the inception of the Campus in 2005. Their support has been invaluable to the agencies who have come together on one Campus with a common goal of ending homelessness. These agencies provide: medical services; meals; identification; reunification with family; shelter; navigation; employment and so much more. Grants from Thunderbirds Charities also inspire other donors to match their funding, creating an impact of tens of millions of dollars in our community to end homelessness.
Thousands of lives have been transformed as a result of the Thunderbirds’ generosity. Thank you Thunderbirds Charities!

Phoenix Community Alliance Creates Homelessness Subcommitte
|
The Phoenix Community Alliance (PCA) played a vital role in the development and fundraising efforts to create the Human Services Campus in 2005.
The PCA Homelessness Subcommittee's work plan is to determine what role PCA can and should play in the increasing homelessness, opioid addiction and affordable housing challenges, which are separate but interrelated issues of primary concern across all PCA Committees.
The Human Services Campus looks forward to collaborating with the PCA to create more solutions to end homelessness in our downtown community!

ThirstAID Water Drive On Track To Hydrate Campus Clients through Summer Heat
100,000 Bottles Collected Thru June of 300,000 Goal
|
Thirst-Aid is a drive to ensure homeless adults in the Valley have their heat relief needs met to prevent serious health concerns common to those exposed to Arizona summers. The HSC is collaborating with St. Joseph the Worker, CASS, Circle the City, Homeless I.D. Project, St. Vincent de Paul and others to keep our guests on the Campus hydrated throughout the summer. Midwestern University Animal Health Institute and GV A HEC bring Mobile Clinic to Campus
|
A big shout out to our friends at Midwestern University and Greater Valley Area Health Education (GV A HEC) for coming out to The Human Services Campus on July 17th and providing vaccinations and even minor surgery for the pets of the clients we serve! We are truly grateful for all the great work you all do in the community on a regular basis. Thank you!
