Volume 11 | August 29th 2021
Greetings!

We are fast approaching our Centenary Challenge which will take place over four days commencing on the 7th September. This tournament is one of the highlights of our Centenary Year when we will showcase our magnificent golf course to visitors’ whilst also giving members the opportunity to challenge themsleves on two other links courses namely Co Louth (Baltray) and Portmarnock Links.

For those that are unable to play over the four consecutive days we also have 2 day competitions (details below).

If you are involved in a business that occasionally does some corporate entertainment perhaps you might consider booking a team into either one of the two day competitions or our four day Challenge. There are fantastic prizes to be won and of course the bragging rights of being able to say you were the winners of St. Anne’s G.C. Centenary Challenge.

There are a couple of tee times still available so if you are interested, please contact me on [email protected].

For those of you already booked I hope you have a very enjoyable tournament and thank you for supporting this showcase event.

CENTENARY REFLECTIONS IN THE COMPANY OF THE SHEERAN/MACNEICE FAMILY
Since the 1950’s the Sheerans and MacNeices have been synonymous with St. Anne’s G.C. This family dynasty started with Jack Sheeran and his sister-in-law Chrissie. This month, across 2 special interviews, we hear from 3 of Jack’s children; Margaret MacNeice, Gerry Sheeran and Bernice Alexander, as well as his daughters-in-law Antoinette Sheeran and Ann Sheeran, and grandsons David MacNeice, Colin Sheeran and James Sheeran.

Many thanks to all the family members for sharing their perspectives of St. Anne's over the years and across generations!

MARY ROSE O’FLAHERTY
It was with great sadness that we learnt of the untimely death of Mary Rose O'Flaherty during the week.

As you will remember we featured the above photo of Mary Rose in our Centenary Newsletter last month as she had very kindly sponsored (along with the Joker Fund) our new Centenary Clock.

Mary Rose was a stickler for punctuality on the tee box and felt that the club was in need of large, legible clock so she approached the Centenary Committee and said she would like to sponsor it. We will be forever grateful for her generosity, her friendship and her competitiveness and knowledge on the golf course.

Rest in Peace Mary Rose, you will be greatly missed.

DESIGNER OF OUR CENTENARY LOGO VISITS ST. ANNE’S G.C.
We were delighted to recently welcome Sally-Ann Kelly to St. Anne’s to present her with a copy of our Centenary Book.

Sally-Ann was the winner of a competition held in conjunction with the National College of Art and Design to design a Centenary logo.

PRESIDENT THERESE AND TOM MCCORMACK PRESENT THE CLUB WITH A BEAUTIFUL CENTENARY GIFT
For those of you that played in our recent President's prize you may have seen the beautiful new perpetual trophy that was on display. President Therese Mc Cormack and her husband Tom gifted this to the club to mark our Centenary Year.

This trophy comes from an English firm known as Hukin & Heath (1855-1953) and was established by Johnathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplaters. They entered silver marks in London in 1879, by which time they had established showrooms at 19 Charterhouse Street, Holborn. The showrooms were described as “redolent of art”, while the art works were produced without increasing the cost, exhibiting “grace combined with the useful, simplicity and purity form with readiness of application to the purposes to which they are to be applied”. Their mark was H&H with an eagle.

This stunning trophy dates from 1901 and will be presented to the male and female winners of the President's prize each year. Congratulations to the first two winners who will have their names recorded on the trophy Bernadette Aird and Niall Collins

GIRLS JUVENILE CAPTAIN EMMA MACHUGH AND CAPTAIN LEO "GEORGE” DEVITT PRSENT CENTENARY BOOK TO TETYANA TSARYK AND ANDRIY OZERNVY
One of the most admired aspects of St. Anne’s clubhouse is the collection of impressionist paintings which enhance the restaurant as well as the paintings of the clubhouses. These were painted by a husband and wife team, Ukrainian artists Tetyana Tsaryk and Andriy Ozernvy. More recently, they were also commissioned to make our new sign on the stairs. It was wonderful to have them visit the club recently where they were presented with a copy of our Centenary Book.
