Volume 9 | June 27th 2021
Greetings!

It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through our Centenary Year. On the 1st July we will celebrate our Inauguration Day with a golf day, then in September we have our Centenary Golf Challenge which will take place over 4 days and 3 golf courses so there is lots of golf to look forward to over the coming months (details of both are below).

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 1st July for what we hope will be a lovely day of golf amongst friends to mark this special occasion in our club’s history.

Enjoy your golf and keep well.

INAUGURATION DAY 1ST JULY 2021
On the 1st of July 1921, Marmaduke Montgomery Devitt drove in as first Captain of St. Anne’s Golf Club and so the club was officially inaugurated.

To commemorate this historic day and 100 years of progress that we have seen on our spectacular links course since then, a special Inauguration Day Golf Event for members will be held on Thursday July 1st. The format will be an 18 hole competition, four person team event and to play on such an historic occasion should be a lot of fun.

The Centenary Committee would like to thank Newbridge Silverware for their most generous sponsorship of the prizes.

It is expected to be a memorable day for all competitors and for those unable to play the Centenary Committee looks forward to seeing you at some of the other events planned for later in the year when more traditional celebrations might be possible.

Here's hoping for a good day's weather on the 1st!
CENTENARY MESSAGE FROM PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON
Another treat this month as the one and only Pádraig Harrington sent a special message to St. Anne's Centenary President, Captains and members on our Club's milestone 100th year.

A massive thank you to Pádraig and we hope to see him back on the links very soon!

MICHAEL COLLINS –
A FATHER FIGURE IN ST. ANNE’S FOR OVER 60 YEARS
Michael Collins was a name on everyone’s lips in 1921, but the Michael Collins who came to St. Anne’s was more interested in the balance of nature than the balance of power.

Although he had no formal education in either gardening or horticulture Michael displayed, from the very start a natural gift for understanding the Bull Island terrain. He worked originally as a gardener in a local hotel but then become a links workman and then greenkeeper at The Royal Dublin GC where he showed an immediate interest and intuition for the job.

Michael’s first contact with the new, and as yet un-named, course down the island was the offer of overtime to build some greens. He came for a bit of work and stayed a lifetime, until his death, aged, 81, in 1981. His work on the course was always sure and certain, his presence in the clubhouse always kind and friendly.

He became a father figure, the heart and soul of St. Anne’s. When he became too old for work on the course in the late sixties and seventies Michael “retired” to steward the bar where his advice on course building and development was always sought and respected.

As you will read, there are many parallels over the 100 plus year history of both clubs. We thank the President, Captains and members of Greystones GC for their very kind wishes.
