SUMMER 2024

President's Message

Hello Daughters!!

As Daughters of the King, we are called to serve and this is reflected in our Motto as we are all well aware: Lord, what will you have me do? In order for us to know what we are being asked to do, we must get quiet and take precious time to be with God to hear His whisper to us. And when we hear what we are being asked to do, we must have an open heart and willingness to step away from what is comfortable and convenient and be willing to be used in whatever ways He brings to our attention. We must never be too busy, too tired, or think we are too old or are lacking in skills. God equips the called!  We must always remember that ”why we serve” is as important as ”how we serve”.  As Daughters, we know that we receive the Peace, Hope, Joy and Love of our Lord through allowing His light to shine through us to others. This Light shines to others when we are serving. Our relationship with God is real and vital to us and is enhanced when we answer His call. We are transformed by our closeness to God, and we are perfected spiritually. We are so very blessed to be Sisters in Christ.

To God be the glory!

"just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Mathew 20:28

Nadine Craig, our Diocesan Assembly President was newly elected and Sue McIlrath, Diocesan Assembly Treasurer was re-elected and will again serve as International Chair. They both assume office on September 1st.

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH!

The Rt. Rev. Sean Row Elected New Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church

The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, bishop of the Episcopal Dioceses of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York, was elected and confirmed the 28th presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church on June 26 for a nine-year term beginning November 1, when current presiding bishop Michael Curry will retire.

Rowe was chosen from among five nominees on the first ballot.

Rowe, 49, was ordained bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania in 2007 and became bishop provisional of Western New York in 2019. From 2014 to 2018, he served as bishop provisional of the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem.

Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Rowe earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Grove City College, a Master of Divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in organizational learning and leadership from Gannon University.

Rowe was the youngest Episcopal priest in the U.S. when he was ordained in 2000 at age 24, and he was the youngest member of the House of Bishops when he was ordained and consecrated at age 32.

Known for his research and work on organizational learning and adaptive performance in the church, Rowe serves as parliamentarian for the House of Bishops and the Episcopal Church Executive Council; chair of the Episcopal Church Building Fund; and as a member of the Standing Commission on Structure, Governance, and Constitution and Canons. He also serves on the Greater Buffalo Racial Equity Roundtable. In 2018, he became the first bishop to serve on the House of Deputies Committee on the State of the Church.

Rowe is married to Carly Rowe, a Christian educator; they have a daughter named Lauren.

The presiding bishop takes office on Nov. 1. Details about the transition and celebration will be announced after General Convention.

July 10th was the Diocesan Commemoration of Canon Nelson Pinder, who went to his eternal kingdom on this day in 2022. We give thanks to God for his incredible life and witness to Christ's life-giving and liberating love, in a ministry, his support of The Daughters of the King, and career spanning 60 years.

Labor Day, September 2nd

Labor Day isn’t just about celebrating what we have accomplished. It is also about remembering God. Bible verses about work remind us that all that we have achieved today are blessings from Him. So, in response, let’s come to God with a Labor Day prayer for all the blessings and work opportunities He gave us. Whether it is Labor Day, or just a regular workday, let us always remember to pray.

But how do you pray for Labor Day? There’s no hard and fast rule, really. But as with all things, prayer for labor can also be a prayer of thanksgiving, we can thank God with gratitude in our hearts for blessing us with work. We can also assume a prayer of submission, where we also ask for His continued guidance as we strive to work hard in His name.

What Does the Bible Say About Labor? Why is Work Important?

God is our ultimate symbol of work-life balance. If we relook at (Genesis 1), God worked and rested on the seventh day. But what many forget is that God came out from His rest to work. We need to rest before work. And we work because God commanded us to. When God created us to multiply in numbers, He was not simply referring to population but also civilization (Genesis 1:28). Thus, work is important because we were called to work by God. Labor is in fact a blessing, not a burden.

But why is work so hard? Because of The Fall. This catastrophic event allowed sin to enter into our lives, into our relationship with God and mankind. That is why though work is still a blessing, it is also under the curse of sin. Labor is no longer as peaceful and fulfilling as it once was in the Garden of Eden, but tiresome and many times, fruitless, and pointless. But let’s keep our faith in God that despite work being laborious due to sin, He will always reward us justly for our work (Matthew 20:4). With these prayers, let’s remind ourselves that our work on earth is not how much we have contributed to society, but how much we have glorified God in society (Matthew 5:16).

Prayer For Labor Day Weekend

This prayer for Labor Day festivities is our way of thanking God for the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with loved ones. As we offer a prayer for Labor Day weekend plans, let us remember to ask God for His heavenly guidance as we commit to working hard in His name.

Heavenly Father, thank You for another chance to celebrate our wins this Labor Day weekend. Thank You for bringing together our loved ones as we take this short reprieve to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate all the hard work we have accomplished. We wouldn’t have been able to come this far if it was not for Your guidance, for all that we do is for You Lord. While we enjoy our Labor Day celebrations, we vow to continue working hard. Everything we do is in Your name, Lord, and may we never forget that. We lift this prayer to You and Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Labor Day Prayer For Unity

Our prayer for Labor Day must also seek to unite all of us in His name. As we are all workers of God, let us pray together for His guidance to work in unity and in harmony. After all, we make more progress when we work together.

Almighty Lord, thank You for blessing me with companions and colleagues at work whom I can rely on to create marvelous things in Your name. We may not always see eye-to-eye, but at the end of the day, we know we must get our work done together, and not separately. Please guide us always, that we may remember to always cooperate with one another and resolve any issues peacefully. I also pray for humility, that I can set aside my pride and ideas and be an effective team player that works well with others. Grant me wisdom and thoughtfulness to see things from others’ perspective and not be quick to judge. We are all united in You, Lord. May we continue to pray and work in unity for You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Labor Day Prayer for Reflection

Labor Day is also a day for reflection – reflecting not only on how much we have achieved, but also how we could have done better in our words and actions at our workplace. This Labor Day, make your petition to God to become a better employee, a better colleague or a better boss.

Lord Almighty, I thank You for giving me the chance to show my capabilities as a worker in Christ. Thank You for providing me with the talents and skills I have today, and for the opportunities given to me to showcase these blessings and share them with others. Today, I think back on how far I’ve come, and what I have accomplished thanks to You. I’ve come a long way, and I know it’s because You’ve been by my side to guide me towards the right path. May You watch over me as I strive to become an even better person at my workplace, a person more and more like You. In my words and deed, I want to glorify You and be a witness of Yours to the people around me. Amen.
