Growing Readers, Inspiring Educators: WMLC Celebrates Year Four

Every summer, the Western Massachusetts Literacy Collaborative’s (WMLC) Summer Learn & Earn Literacy Corps brings together future educators to make a meaningful impact in local schools.

Now in its fourth year, the program welcomed 45 Literacy Intervention Teachers (LITs), all local college students preparing for careers in education. After receiving professional development in literacy instruction, the LITs spent the summer working one-on-one and in small groups with students in Springfield, East Longmeadow, and Westfield, helping young readers strengthen their skills, build confidence, and foster a love of learning.

The WMLC recently celebrated another successful summer at its annual Summer Learn & Earn celebration at Elms College, recognizing the incredible work of these future educators and the impact they have made throughout the community.

Through partnerships with local colleges and schools, the WMLC is helping prepare the next generation of educators while making a lasting difference for hundreds of young readers across Western Massachusetts.

Congratulations to all of the LITs, educators, schools, and partners who made this summer a success!

Benjamin Sullivan Named as Director of MBA and Graduate Programs

Elms College has appointed Benjamin Sullivan as director of MBA and graduate programs and assistant professor, bringing to the role more than 15 years of experience across higher education, finance, accounting, and business development.

In his new role, Sullivan will provide leadership and oversight for graduate business education at Elms while teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in accounting, taxation, entrepreneurship, and other business disciplines. He will help guide the continued growth and development of the college’s Master of Business Administration program, which offers flexible courses to support students as many are pursuing their degree while working full-time.

Elms College Welcomes Caitlin Harkin as 2026-2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant

Elms College is proud to welcome Caitlin Harkin as its 2026–2027 Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA).

Through the Fulbright Ireland-USA Program, outstanding candidates travel to select institutions across the United States to share their expertise and culture. Elms is one of only a few colleges in the country to host an Irish-language FLTA each year. In 2026–2027, just 19 Fulbright awardees will travel to the United States.

Since 2010, Elms has partnered with the Irish Cultural Center of Western New England to host an Irish-language FLTA annually. The program provides Elms students and the greater Western Massachusetts community with a unique opportunity for immersive language learning and meaningful cultural exchange that extends far beyond the classroom.

We are excited to welcome Caitlin to the Elms community and look forward to another year of celebrating Irish language and culture on campus.

Summer Events Recap

Cape Cod Luncheon

Cape Cod was the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of reconnecting with the Elms community, despite the rain. Alumni and friends gathered for our annual Cape Cod Luncheon, sharing a meal, catching up with old friends, and enjoying a little taste of summer. It was a relaxed afternoon filled with conversation and memories, proving once again that Blazer connections don't end when you leave campus.

Sweet Summer Social

What better way to spend a summer evening than surrounded by the Elms College Community? Our annual Summer Social brought alumni, friends, and members of the Elms community back to campus for an evening of food, drinks, conversation, and plenty of catching up. From longtime friends reconnecting to new friendships being made, it was exactly the kind of summer night that reminds us what makes the Elms community so special.

Trip to the Red Sox Game

Batter up! More than just a trip to Fenway, our Red Sox bus trip was a full day of Blazer fun. Alumni and friends traveled from Elms to Boston together, enjoying the ride, the sights, and, of course, an afternoon cheering on the Red Sox. Whether you came for the baseball, the company, or simply an excuse to spend a summer Sunday at Fenway, it was a day worth remembering.
