A note from Broward Cultural Division Director, Phil Dunlap
The Broward County Cultural Division invests public funds in arts and culture because we believe, as you also likely do, that a vibrant arts and culture sector is an essential part of a strong and healthy community.
Each year, the Division awards more than $4 million dollars in grants to support the operations and programing of Broward’s non-profit organizations and projects of individual artists. Beyond grants and public art, the Division’s support extends to training programs for artists to expand their business skills and programs that highlight and grow cultural heritage tourism offerings in the County.
But now, the focus is on the pandemic. What are its impacts on the arts and culture sector now, and in the near future? For those of us who are funders, one of our most important roles is helping to ensure that there is an arts and culture sector once we emerge from this crisis. We see this time of change as a catalyst for new models of arts funding and reorienting our support of the arts in more equitable and sustainable ways.
As a result of COVID-19, Broward’s arts and culture organizations have reported more than $21 million dollars in lost income and additional expenses related to the pandemic during the period from March - May. These include losses related to venue closures (more than $14 million), revenue loss from cancellations (more than $5 million) and additional expenses as a result of the pandemic (more than $1 million.) Also, in these two and half months, Broward organizations have reported a loss of more than 600,000 visitors.
Of vital importance is the critical need for arts advocacy. Thanks to unanimous support from the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, the Cultural Division was able to award nearly $500,000 to 38 local arts and culture organizations through an emergency, supplemental grant program using funds from sales of the Florida State Arts license plates. An additional $6 million of federal stimulus dollars has also been distributed to Broward-based cultural organizations through the CARES Act, as reported by the institutions. The full impact of the pandemic is still unfolding, and we do not yet know the extent of the damage. We do know that as funders, the extent to which we are able to be flexible, patient, and understanding with our arts and culture organizations will be key to the survival of the sector.
Join us on Friday, September 4th at 1:30 PM for a special, Fab! Presents: The state of our art organizations in the Covid19 era, featuring experts on funding and leaders of local Broward County art organizations.
Your invitation was sent to you on August 13, please RSVP. Contact Kat at fundingartsbroward@gmail.com with questions.

Francie Bishop Good Curious Garden: Recent works in Sculpture and Painting
|
|
FAB founder, Francie Bishop Good has been shaking things up in the South Florida art world with her most recent solo exhibit: Curious Garden: Recent works in Sculpture and Painting. Bishop Good’s practice has evolved greatly since 1957, when as little girl she traded her mother’s green stamps for her very first camera and immediately connected to the magic of photography. With a long and passionate career in art, Bishop Good began working with clay in 2016. “She allowed herself the freedom to explore this primal medium without any formal instruction in the traditions of ceramic and pottery,” says Bonnie Clearwater, director of the NSU Art Museum.
Guided by intuition and years of training, Francie Bishop Good has cross pollinated digital photography, paint, and clay to create a world where extraterrestrial forms, three dimensional components and swirling colors live. For her exhibition Curious Garden, individual sculptures, organically inspired pedestals and larger scale works are among the pieces that were featured at the Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami through July. The exhibit is available for viewing online by clicking here. We also invite you to view a video of Francie below creating in her South Florida studio.

A message from the Grants Committee
In these unprecedented times which have devastated arts organizations, we applaud our 2020 grant recipients for their creativity. These organizations have been developing and presenting programming through online platforms, allowing the community safe options for continuing to enjoy the arts. Many, if not most, of this programming is offered at no cost.
Our support of the arts has always been important, but now more so than ever. As we begin planning for our 2022 Grant Cycle, we look forward to giving our valued members the opportunity to participate in our grant screening program. The Grants team will be contacting our past volunteers and looking for additional FAB members to join them in the process of selecting how grant funds will be awarded. AWARDING MONEY to support the ARTS in Broward County is what we are about.
It is our shared hope to renew old friendships and make new ones in a safe way in the near future.
Stay safe,
Cindy Kashdin & Harvey Shapiro
